When Henry Harvey was the Santa they also used to have toys behing mystery curtains and would reveal them at the end of the show. Were the early shows sponsored by Orrs Bookstore on Douglas? I remeber my parents bought me my all time favorite gift from there. It was a P-51 Mustang by cox and had a gasoline engine. You can keep your Red Ryder BB guns because I can still smell the burnt fuel from that magificent airplane.

We must be around the same age because I too remember that and you are correcto about the best all time gift. I too have an almost identical memory of the Mustang. Ahh good times. I was just telling my wife this year was a wonderful Christmas because my son is a believer, no question asked and he still remembers the reason for the season. A proud old man I am :) thanks for the walk down memory lane pogo.

Oh yeah I remember Davids. You could buy Aurora model airplanes for like $.88 and everwhere else they were $.99. And then the Giant store opened and then there was the GEM store. Have you seen how much plastic model airplanes sell for now?

I remember building model planes and cars. My older brother and I spent many hours working on them. Until the bad press came out on the glue. Mom and Dad shut that down pretty fast, or maybe it was we discovered girls.......hmmmmm.....probably a combo of the two.

With a little Googling, I found Gene Rump, now working under the name Gene Edwards for Mississippi Public Broadcasting as a Deputy Director of programming. Evidently, he had to change his last name to be more appropriate for the delicate sensibilities of the people of Mississippi. Apparently, he's happy and healthy and staying busy down there. Doesn't have the cheesy mustache anymore, though.

Gene Rump himself responded on October 4.

Gene is alive and well and living in Jackson where he's the host of the Emmy Award winning PBS series "Writers". The program aired this summer in more than 70 PBS Markets including Topeka (but not Wichita). Yes, I did lose the cheesy mustache. Edward is (and always has been) my middle name.

Go to the MPB - TV - Writers page and there are some pictures of Gene Edwards.

They were succeded by Rick Weaver. "Rick Weaver in your recevier." He had the fortune to do the play by play when we had the great teams in the early 60's. :posterwu:

The name 'John Froom' rings a bell with me... not sure why? Probably because I was born in the late 50's.

Oh, and I'll never forget Ernie Townsley, the PA announcer during the 70's and early 80's. "... and starting at center for the Shockers... a 6'11", 235# freshman from Long Beach, California... OOOOZZELLLLLLL JOOOONNNEESSSSS!" I recall Ernie going on to law school ending his PA days. He was one of the best and could get the crowd rockin' prior to tip-off. I believe Ernie either posted here or maybe called into pre-game shows in the past. Those were the days...

The Old Cobbler was John Froome.

He was also inducted into the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977.

Froome was a radio-TV personality who came to Wichita in 1950 to work for radio station KANS as program director. For years he did color commentary on games of the National Baseball Congress tournament. In 1955 he was hired by KAKE-TV where he did many jobs, including weather and sports. He also created several of KAKE’s popular local shows such as “Party Line” and “Show for Dough.” He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was a graduate of Northwestern University.

He was also in that horror movie they made back in the 60's along with Tom Leahy and other Wichita personalities. I mentioned it in this other thread.

Tom Leahy also made a movie out of Wichita that was never actually released. It was called "King Kung Fu'. It starred a couple of local media types and a whole bunch of people who hung out at Kirby's. It made it to exactly one showing on TV.

If we're getting into real names, Mark Allen's birth name was Mark Trojanowski. He had it legally changed to Mark Allen a couple of years before he left Wichita.
