I don't believe you can discuss the issue of MT in black or white terms.
On the positive, I appreciated how quickly he turned the program around, led us to a S16, and how he became a good ambassador for WSU. He was very well liked and respected in the community.
But let's not give too much credit. How many schools at our level (yes, I said it) have the fan support that has always been here along with the facilities that were later built. The Valley itself became more attractive to recruits. And, at the time, baseball at WSU was one of the reasons that we got Paul Miller, who had a little to do with our S16 run.
On the negative, MT was good at recruiting to a certain level of player, but made it no secret that he found it very hard (maybe impossible in his mind) to get to that next level of player at WSU. There is a greater gamble of players succeeding at the level he was bringing in, and many didn't. Even in his first recruiting class, we saw most of them "top out" in their progress. Yes, we were not going to get Bowles, possibly even if MT had stayed here. Nevertheless, I feel he was wrong in accepting Bowles to aTm and I lost a lot of respect for him doing so. It's just not acceptable practice. As we later found out, there was a lot of discord among the players, as well as between players and coaches. Lossing TB and adding SS was not a positive for us, IMO. I really believe MT was on a sinking ship and he basically lucked out in his connection with the aTm AD as he was not going anywhere else because no one else was calling.
Perhaps it would have been better if MT had left after the S16, we'll never know. But what I do know is we now have HCGM and I couldn't feel better about it. So I'll give credit to MT for his "poor timing" in leaving us, otherwise, we might not gotten HCGM!
There ... I got it off my mind. Now I'm only going to look forward.
Go Shox!!!
