WICHITA, Kan. – Seven-foot center Ehimen Orukpe, a native of Lagos, Nigeria, has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play men’s basketball at Wichita State, Head Coach Gregg Marshall announced today.

“Ehimen is immediately a shot-blocker and a rebounder, and can run and jump, at seven feet,” Marshall said. “The potential for this young man at 18 years old is extraordinary.

“I had sent a representative from my Winthrop staff to Nigeria and when he returned Ehimen was our primary target amongst many targets that would be capable of helping us at Winthrop. Through the transition of coaching staffs, not only at Wichita State, but also at Liberty, where he originally signed then released from his NLI, we began to recruit him to WSU in earnest once that occurred.

“We knew of the talent and size that he possessed. As we continue to develop him offensively, and he gains strength and confidence, and learns to play in our system, he should be an impact player offensively and on the glass.”

Ehimen (A-hee-may) Orukpe (7-0, 220, C, Delta, Nigeria) played for the Ebun Comet, one of the elite amateur club teams in Nigeria.

Orukpe averaged 12.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg a game for Ebun. Orukpe’s coach, Ayo Bakare, coached the 1998 Nigerian National Team.

Orukpe was also recuited by Liberty, Auburn, Western Kentucky, Illinois State and Winthrop.

Orukpe joins Hillsborough (Tampa, Fla.) Community College forward Ejike Hart, a Monrovia, Liberia native; Paris [Texas] Junior College forward Ramon Clemente, a 6-foot-6, 215-pound forward and Queens, N.Y., native; and Three Rivers [Mo.] Community College forward Mantas Griskenas, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward from Rokiskis, Lithuania as Wichita State men’s basketball Spring signees.

I suggest that we just call him "Ruki' on SN.

This is great, I can see the coaching staff improving him from 12 and 9 to
18 and 12 down the line.

From everything we've heard, here are my expectations of Orukpe:

          - By conference play next season he is getting 5-10 minutes as a defensive/rebounding "specialist".

          - The following year he's getting 10-15 minutes as a primary reserve and is servicable on the offensive end.

          - Starting center by his Jr. year.

          Anything more is gravy.

Don't know if it's changed any, but a week or so ago Marshall did say he would possibly get 1 more (he mentioned last night he would like a guard still)...but if it doesn't happen then he'll save it.

I think he'll end up saving it.

Great news. Won't he be a Frosh coming in? We are getting taller which looks genuine at airports. Maybe, just maybe he can actually develop this coming year into a 20 minute a game player? I still think CGM may sign that last player soon if he gets another quality player. He sounded quite upbeat about the incoming recruits who want to be Shockers.

The pieces of this years puzzle are shaping up finer than a frog-hair. What a great job of last minute recruiting Marshall Gregg has done. This will be a fun summer to watch some pick-up games and check out our "face lift" new and improved Shocks!!!!!!! PJ will have a huge Senior year and should flouish in this new system. CGM was looking to our Seniors last night as he spoke to lead us next year for leadership. PJ, MB, and PT, come on down!!!!!!!

I look for this Season to be sorta opposite of last year. Last year we were World beaters at 9-0 and #8 in the Country. Then came Vegas and a disappointing MVC showing as we fizzled at the end. This year, we may start out flat at times but should come together around Valley time which will be cool. We have a fresh start to begin our quest of being a team in the Valley that is one of the top 2-3 teams every year and into the Dance on a more regular basis.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

Not to crank up expectations, but this is the coach who took a 7-game winner of a program prior to his arrival and won 12 straight games in Jan - Feb crunch time in his first season at Winthrop. If he can get close to that, we'll be OK.

I agree, but keep in mind the quality of the competition in the Valley now is quite a bit different than that in the Big South.

My expectations are pretty tempered, but I will say that while the quality of competition was different in the Big South, I am sure the talent he had to work with his first year at Winthrop wasn't close to what it is in his first year at Wichita State. So it's kind of a wash in that respect.

I do believe we will be better than last year eventually (not gonna say championship although I agree ANYTHING is possible in May LOL), but he did take pretty much the SAME players that only won 7 games before he got there at Winthrop and made them champions, so he CAN do the same here. Time will tell, but it's exciting.

This is about what I'm expecting, and, frankly, I'd be happy with this type of performance.

“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'
