Exactly. Live in the city - rent don't buy. Take advantage of all the fringe benefits of being a member of an NBA team. Use these two years to set yourself up for life. Then after you sign your next contract... go get that Lambo and fly crib.

      • Rumor has it that the Raptors are in the running for Kawhi Leonard and they might trade several players to the Spurs to get the deal done. Might involve Fred! Might not.

It's been a quiet summer for Masai Ujiri and the Raptors thus far, with teams unwilling to trade out of the draft, and no cap space to speak of, bringing back Fred VanVleet, while important, was the only move they made in free agency to this point. Fred isn’t going anywhere. NBA players can't be traded within three months of being signed.

      • Trade Lowry... Start Fred lol

Spurs need a point. Who else but Fred if the deal goes down?

NBA players can't be traded within three months of being signed. That means Fred isn’t eligible to be traded until early October.

Well, if he gets paid in US$, it's hard to do better than being in Toronto, because $1 US = $1.32 Canadian as of a few minutes ago when I looked it up.

But if you set aside currency conversion, there's a lot to recommend San Antonio: lower housing prices, no state income tax, and fans absolutely faithful to the Spurs as the one major league team in town (not to mention one with a storied history and great organization).

          • Kawhi is getting traded to the Raptors. No news on what’s part of the deal, besides DeRozan.

The Raptors are finalizing a deal to acquire Spurs All-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard in a trade package that includes All-Star DeMar DeRozan, league sources told ESPN.

              • Not a great deal for Toronto if Kawhi doesn't stick around more than one year? And moving DeRozan doesn't do much for Fred does it?

It's kind of a mixed bag. The worst part for Toronto is that Demar has been so incredibly loyal. Other than that, there isn't a ton of sense in just running the ball back. It looks like the Celtics and Sixers are just going to get better and better for the next three to four years. KL is definitely a step up from Demar if he's healthy (and willing to play). Take a chance on him for this year in your relatively small window. If it works out, great. If not, you've gotten yourself a bunch of cap room starting next year and you can begin the rebuild. Alternatively, you get lucky and he pulls a Paul George and signs a long contract.

It doesn't do much for Fred, but it might signal some new commitment to youth. If Kawhi leaves next summer, I just can't imagine the Raptors giving Lowry a big contract extension in 2020. Maybe it means they'll let Kawhi go, let Fred take over the reigns while they redevelop young talent and see where it gets them.

Agree it depends on which Leonard you get (career peak Kawhi or downward spiraling Kawhi) and whether you think Demar has more upside AND is willing to stick around after his contract. Locking in for a year will not hurt too much; you didn't backslide and it gets you some time to look further down the road.

                • Its a get out of jail free card with the salary cap. They get a better player for one year, and then can sign who ever they want.

                  • Reports are already out that Kawhi has no desire to play in Toronto. I'm guessing this was a middle step in Toronto getting younger, they'll be trading Kawhi to the Lakers now for some younger pieces.

They've gotta wait 2 months before trading him, but it could definitely happen. I don't see why the Lakers would do it, though. Develop this year. Let LeBron get comfortable with the young guys. Let him stop playing basketball before June for the first time in nearly a decade. And then add Kawhi without having to lose any of your young prospects.

agree with jdshock; Lakers don't need "experience". No reason to trade for Leonard now, even if they could. Mid season, they'll see if/what they need to beat GSW and then decide. Toronto can also decide what to do with Leonard; they'll have a good idea which Kawhi they have.

You're not going to want to waste a year of Lebron's career. He isn't getting any younger...if you can get Kawhi in and not cost you as much as the Spurs wanted, you have to do it.
