I wonder why the team didn't charter to Montreal. I know it isn't cheap to do so but with all the travel issues, that seems like it would have been a simpler solution.

Probably because it wasn't a quick return after the game. The plane would either have to return home empty and then return when all is done, or sit someplace for four days -- expensive.
