  • Sutton turned down WSU?

Sutton, at 38 the youngest son of Eddie Sutton, turned down Wichita State after last season. Wisely, it turns out "because they didn't have very good players," said Eddie, who watched from the stands behind his son's bench. That decision was proven wise after Wichita State finished 11-20.

Would daddy-o have been saying the same if ORU as a whole went into oblivion, as it was in some danger of doing after the Richard Roberts spectacle?

While he would be correct about this season, which school has a higher potential ceiling, WSU or ORU?

Oh well, its just gruff old Eddie...

IIRC, Sutton said that he and his wife were on their way to Wichita (driving) for an interview when he decided he wasn't interested. He was obviously never offered the job. I suspect he was plan B after Marshall.

Based on the comment you quoted, it appears he only wants to walk into a ready-made program. I've just gotten the impression that he's a good coach with low aspirations. He's safe and comfy right now. That's not exactly a criticism, but probably not a desirable attitude in a D1 head coach.

I always speculate on what life at Shockerville would have been like, the last 50 years, had Eddie come to play here, as was expected, instead of heading down to Stillwater.

I wonder how ORU would have finished in the MVC this year. I doubt they wouldn't be going to the NCAA.

At the time, many of us (certainly myself) were led to believe he was option #1. I know that my info of the trip to Wichita was accurate but it goes to show you that those of us with SUPPOSED inside info are no lock to be right.

No sane individual would think, in retrospect, that Sutton was the choice over Marshall.

I've wondered that myself. Didn't WSU also pass up him because of his prior history with the NCAA?

Regardless of the info stated in the article, I think Dennis Dodd is a whack job.

He never really gives you the full story. For example...

However, as long as Scott keeps overachieving and playing in high school gyms -- the Summit tournament was played in Tulsa Union High School's John Q. Hammons Center -- he is going to be undervalued.
Did any of you get a chance to see the Summit League Tournament? That "High School" gym that Dodd is talking about is a better venue than many of the Valley schools trot out there.

I was watching, thinking, "there's no way this is a high school gym."

Seemed to me that was a great place to host their tourney.

Here's the web site of our "high school" gym. I live in Union district. It's a crazy facility for a high school, I'll admit. But the voters here voted for it, now we have it. There are some pictures of it on the web site.

I think it seats 6500 or so for basketball. It doesn't even come close to filling up for the high school games.

Very nice arena for a high school, but in no possible way does it compare to Missouri Valley venues. I am sure that Drake would take it. (I've been to Drake to see a game.) Other than Drake, nobody would trade for it. Besides, the CONFERENCE tourney was held there. You would expect something seating at least 15,000 for a conference tourney. Pretty weak to have a conference tourney at a "Neutral" site in the same town as one of the conference teams....

Eddie's comment about making the right decision might be either sour grapes or fermented grapes talking.

Considering Eddie was pretty much campaigning for the job himself....

How do you turn down a job you were never offered and you didn't even show up for an interview. He was maybe a safety net if Marshall didn't want the job. As for Eddie he is still a sleezy old man, how well did his team do this year?

That thing sure is better than what Drake has. The old Omaha Civic Auditorium would have been worse too. But no one else has an arena smaller than that.

Why didn't they at least play the tourney over at the U of Tulsa? That is a bigger venue at least. And I can believe that the Union school district has that. Has anyone seen their football stadium? I thought it was U of Tulsa's when I first drove by it once.

What's wrong with what he said? We didn't have good players and our record speaks for itself. I think sometimes we act like KSU fans, we have one good year and all of a sudden our program is back to being a college basketball traditional powerhouse. We still only have one tourney appearance in the last 20 years.

Once our program goes back to winning 20 games a year consistently and consecutively as well as showing up in the NCAA's at year-end, then we can scratch our heads and say, "what was that guy thinking?". Until then, we are a one-hit wonder for anyone outside of Sedgwick County.
