The last time I saw a shattered backboard was when my dad, my cousin, and I went to an NBA preseason game at the roundhouse. I think it was the Nuggets vs the Kings, and I was probably around 10 years old. Someone shattered one of the backboards, they said it was going to take like 45 minutes to clean up, and we ended up leaving. Haha..
A friend and I were sitting about mid-way up behind that basket. Two guys (I thought it was Dikembe Mutombo and a teammate, but someone earlier said it was Olden Polynice) both grabbed the rim on a put-back dunk. The backboard never had a chance.

Wasn't that also a game that Cliff Levingston was supposed to play in for the Nuggets but didn't? I think it was circa 1994?

              100% certain in was Polynice.

I think the Kings were there because Mitch Richmond was still with the team. I don't remember Cliff being with Denver.

Given today's fitness/science diet, he would make Howard, Queen James et al look like baby shrimp.

Given my memory, I'm about 95% certain I'm probably 83% wrong, give or take 10%.

I still had a remnant of KSU fandom at that time, so maybe it was Richmond I was thinking had a local (or semi-local) connection.

Didn't Darrin Williams break one in HS? So did his teammate Manny Dies. I believe they both had multiple broken backboards.

...that was on an interview/feature with Ahmad Rashad for Inside Stuff. I was wasting time on YouTube the other day watching Game 7 of the 1992 ECSF between the Bulls/Knicks and they showed it. It was kinda funny. Shaq was a once in a generation type of player.

WAAAAAY back in the day, played two years of Juco ball...at the end of every practice, we did a drill like many do in warm ups where everyone tips and the last dunks...on this particular day, the guy who always made the last tip made it a little too high and our dunker(6'8 AND with ups) went to get it and pulled the rim out out crashing glass everywhere...including his prodigious Afro(early70s)....our team went nuts...and our coach, 6'6' himself, spent the next 30 minutes pulling glass out of our teammate's hair...loved it!

btw...we had no replacement backboard so for the next 5 days, all practices were on one end!

Ha, awesome. It's great you guys remember some of those details. I guess my memory of it isn't as fuzzy as I initially thought, because I was fairly sure it was the south goal, as well.
