I agree with the Creighton AD.

Why @JJClamdip: was just telling me and @pogo: the other day how unfair it was that soccer doesn't get proper representation on the NCAA Board of Directors ... especially Creighton's team!

Soccer's time is coming. Affordable, less issues with regards to concussions. It is years away, but it will get there.

Ya know this seems like a reasonable possibility.

I've been hearing about soccer as the "next thing" since the days of watching Kim Roentved score goals for the wichita wings. It must have the slowest growth plan in the history of sports.

Well, I saw Roy Orbison perform at the Kansas Coliseum (not as a headliner, believe it or not, but as an entertainer on stage during some sort of expo) and also at the Augusta High School (!) football stadium. So the main Wilbury vocalist certainly had a chance to hear about Shocker basketball as he passed through.

Meanwhile, I like the comment from the AD at Virginia Commonwealth -- they get plenty of publicity and attention for their basketball, they make money from March Madness, and they don't have to spend millions on football. Plus, it's a lot easier to pay "cost of attendance" for 13 than for 85. What's so bad about that?

Edit: Nice comment about soccer's growth trajectory, Dan. It operates at about the same pace as the game itself. (Although I've actually advocated adding soccer at WSU, at least over football, even though I like college football a lot -- Roll Tide! -- and find soccer a snoozer. If Creighton can reach the College Cup and Akron can actually win it, why not WSU?) But if soccer isn't the answer and someone wants another sport that has some regional appeal, how about wresting? Oklahoma isn't that much different from Kansas, and wresting is a BIG deal there -- maybe the Shocks should start up a wrestling program and try to keep some of the good Kansas talent at home that way.

Well, now I have a reasonable idea as to Dan's age as even I recognize this reference and I haven't lived in Wichita for three decades!

Forget the grumpy ol' guys on SN, they can't handle change very well. -- Soccer would be a great addition!

                              More on Soccer

I am a former licensed soccer coach in the Tempe SC years ago when my son was growing up. Since we moved to KS over 9 yrs ago, I have been glad to see the tremendous growth of the sport in this state. The following are some of the highlights: (1) The youth soccer complex at 135th St & Switzer in Overland Park is considered one of the very finest complexes in the U.S. It annually brings in an estimated $25 M in taxes due to spending by youth soccer teams & their followers who play their year round: (2) The men's & women's pro teams who play in the KC, KS, area are among the best in the US in their respective leagues & their attendance is growing; (3) The US Men's & Women's National Headquarters is moving to the KC, KS area based on what I read a couple of mos ago.

The KU women's soccer team has been a power in the Big 12 this year. About 2 weeks ago, KSU reported they are going to add women's soccer as one of the 16 sports required by the NCAA for Div 1 schools. I think they said they are dropping their equestrian program to make room for soccer.
