Higgins is overrated. Just because he has reffed a Final Four or two, doesn't mean he's an infallible savior. He was horrible and it appeared quite obvious that either he doesn't get along with Marshall or doesn't like WSU in general. VERY obvious after watching any game he does for WSU. I think he's elevated to Ed Hightower status. He thinks he is the best, the ****, that he's not capable of being wrong, and is now being the "show". I didn't have a problem with him while Turg was here but he is a complete ****hole now. Just not impressed with the Savior. But it won't matter. He'll continue to get his paycheck and move on to the next one like nothing happened, even though there was some clear discrepancies in that game. The other two weren't much better. Bradley had the beneficial whistle and it wasn't even close. Thankfully, WSU overcame that adversity and pulled off the 8 v 5 upset.

My whole issue with Higgins, Ref, is that he seems to call our games different that he does BCS school games. The second half yesterday was a little better.

BINGO. ShockRef can try defend the guy, but if you watched the tape of a game Higgins refs in the Valley, and one he refs in a BCS game, it's an obvious difference. OBVIOUS.

Different Conferences want games called differently.

A better example of a refs consistency would be throughout several games in the NCAA tourney.

Anybody remember somewhat late in the game I think, where Cotton was practically tackled over the back for a rebound and nothing was called? I noticed one of the BU posts, white kid, I think Prosser, was constantly pushing off, extending his arms, trying to establish position. Now I know there's leeway there, but this was OBVIOUS and was happening constantly. Those are blown calls.

But the Cotton tackle, I can't believe nobody has mentioned. HORRIBLE. And at a key moment too.

So the NCAA allows conferences to determine how games are officiated and how rules are interpreted? Really? Isn't everybody in the NCAA's eyes considered "equal"? Isn't the game itself supposed to have the same set of standards for all games? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of uniformity and equality to be telling officials to call things differently from one conference to another? If true, that's BS. Also if true, then the Valley proves its suckatude.

But it's more than just that. Specifically in yesterday's games, WSU was being whistled for the same things BU was doing, but WSU was getting lit up for it. Not cool.

That's one reason each conference has their own director of officials or whatever the title is. I know as a HS ref I have to be very aware of which conference I'm officiating in as those who run it want games called a certain way. Some may want more contact to be allowed or to be slow on whistles during certain plays. Others want it tighter. Maybe one conference focuses more on post play while another wants things called differently on the perimeter. If you have a problem with how games are called in the MVC, and I have at times as well, that goes to those in charge in STL. They're the ones who give the directives on how things are handled and why you may see things called or not called that you see in the XII or the B1G or wherever.

Never say never. I have seen KU play the Shocks in the roundhouse before. Since it has happened in the past, it is possible it could happen again some day.

damn.. even though it's on dvr, i just don't have time to document the muggings, play-by-play. damn, that double technical was b.s. . bradley in the bonus 12:00 into the second half. 'shockers truly showed great heart in overcoming adversity.

I agree with this 100%. The better officials will do a better job of carrying out league policies. The better officials seem to be the ones with the worst cases of a$$ against WSU. I'm usually not into conspiracy theories, but it doesn't take much to connect some dots in this situation.

It doesn't have to be anything sinister like "Make it tough for WSU to win a game". Something like "Some of the play is getting too physical for how we want our games played". It's not much of stretch from there to saying that WSU is on the edge of pushing the limits for physical play and if WSU continues with the direction they're going, the entire league could get out of hand for physical play.

It's not too hard to describe a preferred game style to an official that benefits oh, say, a bunch of unathletic white guys from Iowa with great BBIQ who seem to populate the majority of teams in the Valley. As you may have guessed, I don't have lot of fondness for Elgin or the administration of the Valley. That's nothing new, it started about 30 or 40 years ago.

I still remember Gene Smithson's line about Valley replacements for good schools that left. It was approximately, "I left Illinois State to get into a better conference and get to a school that can recruit at a different level than Illinois State. Now the league brings Illinois State into the Valley".

If that's really what's happening, it's BS, and the NCAA continues to make themselves out to be the true hypocrites they are. Elgin and the Valley suck. Period.

It took about 30 years for KU to play WSU in the regular season the last time the series started. That streak is gonna be given a run for its money this time around, if not, forever.
