  • I get not playing a full game, but can you even get your heart rate up in 12 minutes? If you don't get to the arena right on time, it'll take you longer to walk through the parking lot. Seriously disappointing, considering the amount of respect and belief I have for both ADKS and HCPM.

I appreciate making it a full weekend thing, involving more of the other programs in the athletic department, and making a celebration out of it. Do you have to diminish your crown jewel event to make that happen though? That would be like if during the Texas State Fair they decided to make the Red River Rivalry game a 20 minute non-contact scrimmage.

Might be a hot take, but I believe you can find a way to keep the new changes/events added and also IMPROVE the basketball portion of the weekend, not make it worse. Again much kudos for transforming it into a mini-homecoming weekend of sorts, it's a very cool and engaging idea However, I have to dock points for biting the hand that feeds and making the basketball portion worse.

They are so close here. Come back next year with the new events and an actual basketball event to get excited about and draw a crowd, and it'll be an A+.

    • A basketball scrimmage has the potential to sell season tickets. A rap concert might impress visiting recruits, but it's not going to sell season tickets.

Recruits here for the weekend have a chance to meet all the students in their sport. The students in those sports don't need to be introduced at Shocker Madness.

The dunk contest is a bit silly. We know the guys can dunk, and some of the dunks could cause injuries if anything goes wrong. The 3-point shooting contest has some value because we get to see who can hit from 3. Pohto won that his Fr year before he got "coaching" at WSU.

I think that will work like telling your kids that they are grounded to their bedroom for the rest of their life.

            • This is a men's basketball thread. The men's basketball portion has been reduced. Expect men's basketball fans to disapprove.

Good take all all points Aargh but...the rap concert "may" help get even better recruits thus selling more season tickets the following year when they arrive. Maybe. Just an added thought. That is of course if there are any 4-star bigs coming in this weekend. Got any intel on who might be visiting?

Edited - ah just realzed we're out of schollies for next year...so nevermind.

                  • I don't believe the concert was designed or expected to draw in the old white gentrified fans (of which I am a proud member) but more for the hoped for students attending and recruits. I have no problem with this. I will be attending to show my support but I agree with an earlier post that felt that this is a learning experience for the AD and his staff and will improve the product going forward. Go Shocks

WSU athletic director Kevin Saal has encouraged all coaching staffs to prioritize this weekend to hosting recruits and at last count, nearly 40 prospective student-athletes across all sports will be in attendance at Koch Arena on Saturday.

Will there be any MBB recruits in attendance. I don't know. I would not be surprised if T.J. William is there. Shocks are full up for the 2024 season as of this point but 2025 will be a big year for MBB recruiting with 6 seniors likely on the roster next year.

From the article Eldridge wrote a few days ago, there are recruits in sports other than basketball. This was set up to be as close to a homecoming week as they could get without FB. It's design was based on emphasizing all sports. Shocker Madness was included because basketball is the primary sport here.

It makes a lot of sense to have a weeklong emphasis on all sports with nasketball topping it off and to appeal to a younger demographic. there are a lot of people in their 40's and possibly their 50's who grew up with rap as the most influential "music" in their lives.

This event wasn't designed for people who have historically gone to Shocker Madness to get an early look at the basketball teams, With Mills' dedication to statistics of effort and performance, this scrimmage will likely be graded, scored and the results given to the players with the knowledge that the higher they grade, the better their chances of seeing playing time. It's not likely to be like last year's scrimmage where the players gave their teammates the easiest possible offensive opportunities. Lots of drives to the basket were not challenged and if someone wanted to take a shot, it was guaranteed they would get an open look.

A Shocker throws a bad pass, and he knows coaches are watching. They watch the pass, and they watch his reaction to the mistake.

Did he mope and let opponents run past? Or did he sprint back on defense to lessen the harm?

"How quickly can we do the next right thing?" Wichita State basketball coach Paul Mills said. "We're going to mess up, but how quickly can we do the next right thing?"

That scenario is the essence of the "care factor" standings that Shocker coaches and staff chart in practice and regularly hand out on paper to their players. It is part of Mills' data-driven approach that gives information to his team and sets standards and goals.

The list of "care factor" categories is long and ranges from sprinting the court in four seconds to taking a charge to contesting shots. Offensive rebounders need to go to the glass at least 80 percent of the time. Players charged with retreating on defense need to take immediate steps back, instead of watching the ball. It should take a cutter four seconds to go from one side of the court to the other.

"There's so many different ways to impact a basketball game," Mills said. "You're trying to get across to your players that something like a loose ball, there is extreme value in that. There is extreme value in sprinting the court in four seconds."

Players might receive one or two points for good moves and lose points for going in the wrong direction. Any score above zero is a good day and most scores ranged in the negative in the early days of practice. Along the way, the Shockers should learn that their effort and focus contribute to team success. They should also learn coaches will trust players who rank high in care factors.

Shockernetters can have sex 4 times? That would probably take weeks for some of us old farts.
