  • Part 2 - Big Show

Here is the continued after Marshall rant. Host basically admits he wasn't prepared for it but claims Marshall shouldn't have treated him that way.

This clip is a interview with Mitch Holtus. He ask Holtus about the interview with Marshall and "what is going on down there in Wichita". Holtus has a pretty good perspective.

couple interesting things that caught my attention:

Holtus relayed a question that he heard that Marshall was asked. Marshall evidently was asked if he had his Wintrop team this year, would they have won against SWMO - he said yes they would have beaten SWMO.

Holtus thinks Marshall is having trouble adjusting to MVC. He likened to that Marshall was not prepared to move from being "Big Dog" in the Big South to "Freshman" in the MVC. He said that Marshall is getting "schooled" on the MVC and session has not ended yet. Holtus predicted that WSU would lose and lose alot this year.

Holtus also talked how that Turgeon popularity is waining in Wichita since it's becoming clear that he left the cupboard pretty bare. He talked about that Turgeon didn't take advantage of the S16 run. His opinion was that Boyle leaving hurt WSU recruiting and helped on the misses.

Holtus also talked about why there is really no mid-major's and that it's just a wrong label to be used.

He wasn't supposed to be treated that way? He asked really really basic yes or no asked for Coach and Coach answered them.

Mitch is a huge fan of the Valley and of WSU.

To say he is sharp is a big understatement.

P'Matt.....here's an idea. Don't call somebody a "jackass" 6 or 7 times and then apologize for name calling and keep calling him a "jackass".

He said he was not prepared for that response. Well P'Matt, that's not all you weren't prepared for.

There he goes with the "shocker" comment. I get that....I get that......

These guys are terrified of our Coach. Just wait until next year.

They better go ahead and get their licks in now because they will be few and far between in the years to come.

Coach, keep doing what you're doing. We're behind you 100%.

I listened to about 1 or 2 minutes of the first podcast, and turned it off. PAINFUL!!!....

Radio guys will be jerks, but Marshall should not have been the way he was. It was clear he was not in the mood to do an interview, and if you can't bite your toungue and push through it, don't do it....

HCGM is a Class Act all the way, but he faltered on that interview. Mitch's assessment was correct. Chalk it up as a learning experience for GM.

Having said what I just said, I'm behind HCGM 1000%. He's the right guy for the job, and once he gets through this year (however it turns out) and gets more guards and his own group of guys, the tide will turn (if it doesn't sometime later this season).

Not sure how this was Marshall's goof. The interviewer is the one asking the questions and it is his responsibility to ask the questions to obtain the answers. Ask short, obvious answer questions and you get short obvious answers especially when the coach is not in the mood to give more explicit answers. This guy had obviously not done much research on what Marshall has answered in the past. The interviewer started poorly and did not get better. Also we do not know what happened prior to the interview to know if there was something that irritated Marshall prior to the interview (other than the Shox play in the last game). Starting out with an obvious error with respect to WSU's record in the MVC and making Marshall point out that his team's record is worse would be a bad start.

This is how Marshall always is when he gives interviews. Unless you ask a good question, he gives you an answer the question deserved. In the case of Radio Matt, his questions all stunk, so Marshall gave him "bad" answers. Not all coaches want to ramble on for 5 minutes on each question asked. This guy needs to realize that and work on asking better questions. Just because you pretend to be Jim Rome, doesn't mean people respect you like Jim Rome. - Once, I had to interview Bob Huggins. The first 3 questions I asked all got 1-word answers in response. I thought he was in a bad mood until I finally asked a good question, then he gave me a long, 1-2 minute response. Its the quality of the questions that get good answers and Radio Matt needs to realize this and not rip into guests after they hang up.

I listen to this show when in Omaha. It drives me crazy that they do not say Wichita State, it is always Wichita.

Why? I kind of like it referenced w/o the State.

                      More Questions for Coach Marshall

                      1. Do you wish that you had more wins and fewer losses?
                      2. So when you say that the point guard position is important in your offense, do you mean really important or just somewhat important?
                      3. Do you guys work on running your offense in practice?
                      4. Another hypothetical: If you were the coach of Mark Turgeon's Sweet Sixteen team, what would you have done differently to beat Tennessee by a wider margin?
                      5. Do you think that your team will be better or worse in the next couple of years when you get your own players?
                      6. Are you doing everything that you can do as a coach to prepare your team for games?
                      7. In retrospect, do you wish that you had signed more talented players that would have been eligible for this year?

                        Yes
                        Really Important
                        Yes

                        Better, much better
                        Yes
                        These were the best available

Wow, that was easy... Maybe I should tell the Basketball Office that I am available to do interviews with certain "journalists".
