Cliff Levingston and Antoine Carr combined for 42 points and helped Wichita State dominate the backboards in a 95-70 rout of Southern University. In its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, Southern, from Baton Rouge, La., opened a 20-14 lead behind the hot shooting of Anthony Bryant. But a basket by Carr with 8:48 left in the first half tied it at 26-all. Wichita State took the lead for good 30 seconds later on a bucket by Mike Jones. The Shockers opened a 45-37 halftime lead, then outscored Southern 20-6 in the opening minutes of the second half to go up 65-43.
1965 – Won vs. (#RV) Oklahoma State in Manhattan, Kansas 54-46. Wichita State upset Oklahoma State, 54-46, and advanced to the Final Four… The Shockers grabbed the lead in the first five minutes and protected it with 35 more minutes of stall ball in front of a partisan crowd of more than 12,500 fans at Kansas State’s Ahearn Field House… WSU’s five starters played entire game… Inspired play from Kelly Pete (19 points, nine rebounds) helped the Shockers overcome a distinct size disadvantage… Vernon Smith finished with 12 points, and Dave Leach added 11…WSU scored on nine-straight possessions to open the game, going 7-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 at the foul line, to take a commanding 17-7 lead… After shooting 76.5 percent in the first half (13-of-17) to stake a 31-22 halftime lead, the Shockers missed their first seven shots to begin the second period… Jamie Thompson scored WSU’s first bucket, over eight minutes into the half… OSU twice crept to within four points, the last at 41-37 with 8:30 to go… Over the next 90 seconds, Smith turned back the Cowboy surge with a pair of free throws and a layup.
