  • Today in Shockers Sports History: February 16th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    16 and 18

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2020 – Beat Tulane in Wichita 82-57. Dexter Dennis scored a career-high 21 points with a game-high nine rebounds and Tyson Etienne added 20 points as Wichita State beat Tulane 82-57 on Sunday. Dennis hit 8 of 10 shots, including 4 of 6 on 3-pointers, while Etienne shot 7 of 9, including 6 of 8 from the arc. The Shockers made 13 of 24 3-point tries for 54%, better than the 48% they shot overall and nearly matching the 55% they shot at the free-throw line (11 of 20). Jaime Echenique added 10 points for Wichita State (19-6, 7-5 American Athletic Conference) while Jamarius Burton added seven assists to go with nine assists. The Shockers' 30-point halftime lead (50-20) tied for the fifth-largest in program history.

2014 – (#4) WSU Won at Evansville in Evansville, Ind. 84-58. No. 4 Wichita State relied on the basics Sunday: defense and ball security. Again, it was the perfect combination. The Shockers forced 18 turnovers, finished with a season-high 14 steals and finally locked down Evansville's shooters late to pull away for an 84-68 victory that kept them one of the nation's two undefeated teams. Few expected the Shockers (27-0, 14-0 Missouri Valley Conference) to be in this spot -- even after reaching the Final Four last April. They are one of only 21 teams in NCAA history to win their first 27 games, extended their school-record winning streak and are 14-0 in conference play for the first time in school history.

2000 – Beat Illinois State in Wichita 73-56

1998 – Won at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa 68-63

1995 – Beat Indiana State in Wichita 67-58

    1978 – Beat Tulsa in Wichita 64-56

1966 – Won at Bradley in Peoria, Ill. 76-74

1963 – (#9) WSU Beat (#1) Cincinnati in Wichita 65-64. One of the finest victories ever in the Roundhouse came on February 16, 1963 against two-time defending national champion Cincinnati. Again ranked No. 1 nationally, the Bearcats entered with a 37-game winning streak (at the time, the fifth-longest streak in college basketball history) and led the nation in scoring defense at 52.9 points per contest. A Shocker sophomore by the name of Dave Stallworth nearly reached that total by himself, sinking 14-of-22 shots from the field and 18-of-23 from the foul line on his way to 46 points. WSU’s 65-64 victory was one of only two blemishes on Cincinnati’s 26-2 final record. The other loss for Cincinnati came to Loyola in the NCAA championship game. Dave Stallworth scored seven straight points to wipe out a six-point Cincinnati lead during the final 3:10, as the Shockers upset the Bearcats for the second season in a row. The victory snapped a 37-game Cincinnati winning streak, and Stallworth’s 46 points would stand for the next two decades as the school scoring record, until Antoine Carr’s 47-point game in 1983.

    1959 – Beat Houston in Wichita 65-63

    1911 – Beat St. Mary’s (KS) in St. Mary’s 51-39
