  • Today in Shockers Sports History: January 7th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    21 and 14

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2018 - (#9) WSU Beat South Florida in Wichita 95-57. His team had just been blown out, and South Florida coach Brian Gregory grabbed the stat sheet to make sure his players saw a small number that stood out to him. Landry Shamet, the star guard for No. 9 Wichita State, took just two shots in a 95-57 victory on Sunday. "Two shots the whole game," Gregory said. "He don't care. I mean, All-American, NBA first-round pick, and he doesn't care about any of that. That's because of the type of high-level program they've built." Shaquille Morris led the Shockers (13-2, 3-0 American Athletic Conference) with 15 points. Zach Brown had 13 points, and Markis McDuffie scored 12 for Wichita State. Darral Willis finished with 11. Morris, Brown and McDuffie were a combined 16 of 19 from the floor, helping the Shockers shoot 62.7 percent. Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall pointed to Shamet's unselfishness and seven assists as a catalyst. "We had 28 assists on 37 baskets," Marshall said. "Look around college basketball, and you won't see many teams getting 28 assists. I liked our ball movement."

2015 - (#15) WSU Beat Bradley in Wichita 63-43. Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall stood outside of his locker room at halftime Wednesday night and just listened. He didn't hear much. There was a little chatter, with team leader Fred VanVleet leading what little conversation there was. That was the result of his team playing a horrible first half and trailing at halftime for just the second time this season. "I didn't recognize that team, that effort, that execution, that determination," Marshall said. But he certainly recognized the Wichita State team he saw in the second half. No. 15 Wichita State turned things around after halftime to run away from Bradley 63-43. "I'm glad there's two halves," Marshall said. Darius Carter scored a game-high 19 points to lead Wichita State (13-2, 3-0 Missouri Valley Conference). Ron Baker scored 12 and Shaquille Morris added 10 points Wichita State.

2011 - Won at Illinois State in Normal, Ill. 65-51. J.T. Durley scored 13 points to help Wichita State to its eighth straight victory in a 65-51 win over Illinois State on Friday night. The Shockers (13-2, 4-0 Missouri Valley) went ahead late in the first half and never trailed after that. They led by as many as 22 points in the second half. Garrett Stutz added 10 points for Wichita State while Toure Murry led the team in rebounds with eight. The Shockers shot 49.1 percent from the field.
