Wichita State is undefeated this season, and for good reason. It's a talented, well-coached, hard-playing team that competes to win. The Shockers have depth, size, skill and one of the best point guards in college basketball in VanVleet. He reminds me of former Miami Hurricanes guard Shane Larkin. VanVleet controls the pace of the game, makes excellent decisions and sees all five defenders off the spread ball screen. He has a 4.32-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, which ranks No. 2 in the country.
VanVleet can hit the 3-pointer (42.3 percent) if the defender goes under, and has a number of different layups when he turns the corner to score. Gregg Marshall gives VanVleet freedom to make plays, and VanVleet delivers. It’s hard to speed him up, and he’s at his very best at the end of games. VanVleet makes sure the Shockers are connected offensively and defensively, a major reason why they have a legitimate shot to run the table and earn a No. 1 seed.

Am I crazy or does FVV seem to have hit somewhat of a wall the last few games? Which of course means that he's still played better than 80% of PG's in the country (as a sophomore). I dunno, his decision making just doesn't seem as sharp to me as earlier in the year.Comment

From the SI post about Fred that Paul S linked today, an interesting comparison:

Edit: that same piece cited "Win Shares," one of the advanced metrics (basically, it's the basketball version of "Wins Above Replacement," a Bill James stat) that some people now use to evaluate a player's individual contribution, and it said that FVV had a 4.6 Win Share rating, which is way up there -- by comparison, Doug McDermott had a 4.5 Win Share rating. And we all know Doug is the greatest thing since sliced bread, which must mean that Fred is the greatest thing since sliced bread with peanut butter on top.
By the way, pie, I'm also noticing that Fred is having a somewhat tougher time of it in recent games. I agree that he's likely been scouted -- that's life in the Valley -- and will need to adjust, which he should be able to do. But I also wonder if the number of minutes he plays may be starting to catch up with him just a bit. I think the team is just wearing down a bit as the season grinds on. FVV isn't playing at the unbelievable level he was playing earlier, but he's still putting W's on the board.
Potential 3-year AA. Did Carr do that?
I just compared FVV to Carr. With what they each do or did at the position they play, I think it's a reasonable comparison.The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

But since things aren’t always going to go that way, he saw the benefit in Wednesday’s seven-point win at Indiana State.
The Shockers needed to make plays in pressure situations for the first time since an overtime win at Missouri State on Jan. 11. Indiana State never trailed by more than seven points in the final 10 minutes and got within two in the final two minutes. Dealing with that scenario is rare for WSU in Missouri Valley Conference play.
“If you go a long while without being in those situations, you might get rusty,” VanVleet said. “I don’t feel like that was a problem. I feel like we’re well-trained. When you’re trying to play for championships … you’re going to have to know how to play in those situations.”Comment

This is Fred's first year as the man. So he is playing more minutes than last year. He also doesnt have a backup. I'm not sure if he is hitting a wall, but Im sure he is still aduysting a bit to the volume of a college basketball season.
