  • Wichita State vs. Memphis Pregame Discussion 1-21-21

    WICHITA STATE (8-3, 4-1) vs MEMPHIS (6-4, 2-1)
    THURSDAY, JAN 21, 2021 | 6:00 P.M. CT
    MEMPHIS, TN / FEDEX FORUM
    TV: ESPN2
    RADIO: KEYN 103.7 FM (GoShockers.com/Listen)
    LAST MEETING: MARCH 5, 2020. WSU 60 - MEMPHIS 68
    GAME RECAP: MEMPHIS, Tenn. –
Dexter Dennis scored 15 points to lead a group of four double-digit scorers, but another second-half comeback wasn't in the cards for Wichita State in a 68-60 loss to Memphis at FedExForum.

Wichita State (22-8, 10-7 American) drops into a fourth-place tie with Memphis (21-9, 10-7) with one game to play. The teams split their regular season series, but the Tigers hold all of the relevant tiebreakers for the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in next week's Armed Forces American Athletic Conference Championship.

Dennis was 5-of-17 from the field and finished with six rebounds and a pair of steals. Jamarius Burton and Jaime Echenique scored 13-each to go with 11 points and eight boards from Grant Sherfield.

Reserves accounted for 38 of the 68 Memphis points, led by Tyler Harris' 19 points on 5-of-9 three-point shooting. Precious Achiuwa supplied another 14 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

Shockers erased a seven-point deficit in the final 5:00 against Temple and surged from 24-down to defeat SMU. They couldn't summon the same magic against Memphis, which pushed a five-point halftime lead to as many as 17 late.

WSU shot 34.4 percent from the field, including 6-of-23 from deep, and went 10-of-22 at the foul line.

Memphis finished at 37.7 percent from the field but made 9-of-26 threes and 13-of-19 free throws.

Those struggles weren't unexpected in a battle of KenPom top-10 defenses. Memphis came in leading the nation in field goal percentage defense with WSU at No. 21.

Points came in fits and starts for both sides.

The Shockers jumped to 7-0 lead then didn't score again for another seven minutes.

Memphis missed its first seven shots but bounced back with a 13-0 run.

WSU shook loose over the last four minutes of the half to trim an 11-point deficit to two. The Shockers had a shot in the air to tie, but Dennis' mid-range jumper missed the mark.

Harris ended the half with his third trey to give Memphis a 29-24 cushion, and the lead stayed at two-or-more possessions the rest of the night.

The Tigers led by 10 after a quick start to the second half.

WSU made it interesting with a six-point possession, beginning with a free throw and an offensive rebound. Burton hit a three then scored on a layup after Dennis picked off the Tiger inbound pass to trim the deficit to 34-30 with 16:00 to play.

Memphis scored the next eight points to restore order.

Harris, Lester Quinones and Alex Lomax all made timely shots for the Tigers, who led 62-45 with 5:00 left.

Sherfield scored eight points on a couple of threes to keep the door cracked. The second made it a 66-58 game with 27 seconds to go, but the Shockers would get no closer.

I’ve watched Memphis twice and wasn’t impressed overall. Their defense is still very good. They're athletic shot blockers. The turnovers created by a full court press prevented a home loss to USF.

They rely on transition and offensive rebounds to score and will build a mansion sized brick house if forced to play in the half court.

We should have the ball handlers to break their press, our transition defense has improved, and we have the athletes to stay with them on defense and pressure them with the bounce on offense.

Our rebounding is trending in the right direction. Winning the battle of the glass this game would be another big step overall and would improve our chances of securing another road win.

This is a game we can and, if we truly want to compete for a regular season crown, should win.

The way Memphis defense swarms, this is a good game to have some extra practices. We have good guards to attack their press, but we didn't always do a good job against Tulsa's pressure the other day. We need to play smart against Memphis because long three point shots isn't the recipe to beat them.

Memphis has better athletes.....they just have to overcome not having Mike Miller on the bench...

        Ralph Miller 67
        Gene Bartow 65

We have played the second toughest defensive schedule in the country according to KenPom and Memphis currently sits at #12 on KenPom for defense so it doesn't get any easier. Shots at the rim will be at a premium. I don't believe Mo is going to be able to bully Moussa Cisse and Malcolm Dandridge like he did UC and Tulsa. The offense will need downhill momentum, so hopefully we see a lot of Tyson and Ricky driving the lane and dishing to open shooters. First team to 60 probably wins this one.

In a half court game you are right, but Memphis pressures, swarms, double teams, and gambles a lot (full court and half court). I think when that happens, the guys have to penetrate, and attack Cisse, and then dish off. They may even be able to get him into foul problems. Dishing off for 3's when that happens is ok too.

Memphis turns the ball over ... Alot. Transition offense is where we win this game IMO.

If the game comes down to who has the better athletes, Memphis will win.

If the game comes down to who played the better basketball, WSU wins.

This will be a good game to measure Udeze's progress. This is the type of team he struggled with in the past. Hopefully he can avoid foul trouble and turnovers. He will need to pass it back out when their bigs are on top of him under the rim.

Or It may just be a bad matchup for Morris but you are right that he may have to adjust his game to be effective.

Memphis fans are quite displeased with their coach/team. Apparently Penny recently made a comment in the press that during timeouts his players are too busy blaming each other for what went wrong that they don't hear what the next play is. If true, that's a program in complete disarray where the coach has no control over his players, and doesn't bode well for the future.

I saw that .. and he made that comment before the Tulsa game .. yet it still appeared to happen in the Tulsa game.

They just had a Top 30 recruit de-commit.

They also have not had to face the consequences yet for intentionally violating NCAA rules. I wonder if Memphis will decide to use that ruling whenever it comes to part ways with the U.S.S. Hardaway.
