  • WSU among SI's College basketball losers this year.

    The season ain't over !

    Wichita State:
It turns out, building a mid-major program that is so consistently good that it makes the NCAA tournament every year is really hard. While Gonzaga will make it for the 21st straight year, the Shockers’ seven-year streak will come to an end barring an unlikely AAC tournament run. People take Gonzaga for granted, but this year’s disappointing performance from the Shockers is a perfect example of why they shouldn’t. Sometimes, it just doesn’t come together. —JW

Thanks for posting ABC! I wish they would have at least referenced the departures from the non-seniors. Given the extent and late timing of the departures, I think most programs would have had significant issues, especially amongst the non-blue blood cheaters.

That's a BS article and lazy journalism. We're in a great spot for an NIT bid. After the LT home loss I think most Shocker fans would have been pleased with what seems likely at least 18 wins, above .500 in conference, a top half finish, and selection to the NIT.

+100 Here's a BRIEF list of BLUE BLOOD NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP programs that also won't make the tournament this year barring an unlikely tournament run. Florida, Indiana, Arizona, UCLA and yes UCONN. Winning IS hard and it's absolutely not to be taken for granted. But Gonzaga isn't some "mid-major" on a good run, they are a once in a lifetime (if not many lifetimes) spectacular successful powerhouse. Missing the dance for 1 season after 7 great ones is hardly losing, but I guess that journalism these days.

Fake news isn't limited to politics and public affairs, Doc.

The writer's tribute to Gonzaga is a point well taken, but the idea that they're a "mid-major" simply because they play in the WCAC is, as others have correctly noted, lazy, sloppy, and more lazy. And it really did take pretty much a perfect storm to put WSU in the situation they're in, which is hardly the same as, "Sometimes, it just doesn't come together." If anything, this has probably been one of Marshall's better coaching efforts -- and that's no criticism of his coaching efforts many other seasons.

So, by this logic, every school in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Pac 12 that rarely make the tournament should be deciding which non power conference to join and dominate then, right?

It's obvious that this author didn't do his homework. All he did was brainstorm great mid-major programs, looked at our record and then wrote his bit. As people have already mentioned.....lazy. At this point, I just want HCGM and the program to extend the consecutive 20 plus game winning seasons streak to 9. It'll be tough, but very darn impressive if they can get 'er done.

The only thing needed for contrast is 3 spots down. Notre Dame. I don't know how much roster turnover they had or how many newcomers they're playing, but there's no way it's as extreme as our situation. And no offense to our program in any way, but it is way easier to recruit to ND than WSU. How many pitchforks are raised if that happened here this year?

Notre Dame: The Fighting Irish finished the season as a sub-.500 team for only the second time of the 19-year Mike Brey era—that’s how poorly the season went in South Bend. To make matters worse, Notre Dame’s 13 wins is the lowest total since 1997 and if that’s not enough, this 13–18 season marks the lowest win percentage since 1995. —AB

                    Good observation, News.

FYI, Notre Dame is somewhat light on experience this year, with Bonzie Colson and Matt Farrell both having finally completed stays last season seemingly worthy of Grant Gibbs. Also, only 11 scholarship players are listed on their roster: one SR, four JR, one SO, and five FR, with their top five scorers being two JR and one from each other class. But they have far more minutes back from last season than WSU does, in addition to which their disappointing season last year ended in the second round of the NIT, not a first round NCAA upset.
