This is just another indication (not that any of us need it...okay, some of you do) of just how far this program has come. Even if we were to come in at #92 (Hofstra is #93), which I don't believe will be the case, to be considered higher than those other programs already listed after basically losing the entire starting lineup and one key backup is testament to the program Gregg has built at Wichita State. It'll be interesting to see where this writer places us.

Temple was the #9 program in the AAC according to them. So unless the writer thinks we will be 10,11 or 12th, we are still to come.

Tulane, ECU, and USF. Surely, we are ahead of all of those squads, right?

Last season this site ranked the Shockers #5; one spot behind the Beakers and one spot ahead of Villanova

        #81 MEMPHIS MEN'S BASKETBALL 2018-2019 PREVIEW - (AAC Rank #6)

        Projection:
Jeremiah Martin had an amazing junior campaign, averaging 18.9 points, 3.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds. He is back to do it again. The 6-3 guard is not the most consistent shooter around, but he can obviously do a ton of scoring. Martin did lead the team with 51 three-pointers, but connected on just 32.7 percent of his attempts from long range. If he can be more consistent shooting the ball, there may not be any defender who can contain him. Kareem Brewton and wing Raynere Thornton are seniors who will add experience to the backcourt. The frontcourt returns Kyvon Davenport and Mike Parks. Davenport averaged 13.3 points and a team high 6.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. The 6-8 senior is a dynamic scorer who can score in the paint and step outside and knock down some shots. Junior college transfer Isaiah Maurice adds some depth to the frontcourt. But the best of the newcomers are freshmen. Coach Hardaway brings in a five man freshman class, highlighted by guards Tyler Harris, Antwann Jones and Alex Lomax.

        Projected Postseason Tournament: NIT

WSU is either not in the top 144 or ranked ahead of Memphis.

I don't know if Memphis fans are going to be happy with a 6th place finish or with finishing behind WSU with the Shox losing everybody of significance and Memphis returning their top guys.

The season is off to an interesting start several months before it starts.

If memory serves...I think the guys that put this list together are pretty good. Not necessarily "spot-on" but pretty good. Seems they always do a pretty good analysis and dig a bit deeper than most. I'm thinking they'll have us somewhere between the Top 50 to 60 range and point to a pretty darn good recruiting class and of course the man Gregg Marshall.

A good analysis would include a comparison to the rebuild year with all those new guys in 2012-13 reaching the Final Four to this years squad but with an even now more proven coach and probably a bit more talent.

Definitely not saying were a Final Four contender next year...but a fair analysis from sportswriters has to at this point understand Coach Marshall's teams (program) and the GREATEST COLLEGE BASKETBALL EXPERIENCE EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Analysts are exercising a little healthy skepticism based on Hardaway's lack of experience coaching D-1 basketball, and coaching against experienced D-1 coaches. He may end up being a great coach, time will tell. But what is certain is that there will be a learning curve.

It will be fun to watch the delusion portion of the Memphis fanbase when they start the season losing a few games with the greatest recruiting class in the history of the known universe.

I almost guarantee that the latter will be correct.

So far, we have seen the following American teams:
                  #6: Memphis
                  #7: UConn
                  #8: Tulsa
                  #9: Temple

Unless USF, Tulane, or East Carolina are going to be ranked in the Top 5 of this league, Wichita State isn't being predicted behind the four that have already been announced.

                    #65 SMU MEN'S BASKETBALL 2018-2019 PREVIEW - (AAC Rank #5)

                    Projection:
The top returning scorer for SMU is Jahmal McMurray who played in just 22 games, 14 of which he started. McMurray was suspended to begin last season, but the Mustangs will get a full year out of the senior guard in 2018-19. McMurray averaged 14.7 points and shot 40.8% from behind the arc as a junior. The health of Jarrey Foster will be a key for SMU’s success this season. Foster, an NBA prospect when healthy, is a 6-6 wing who averaged 13.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 19 games. Foster is also a tremendous defender who helps SMU on both ends of the floor. Jimmy Whitt had a strong debut season at SMU, starting all 33 games while filling the stat sheet with 10.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game. As an upperclassman this year, Whitt could fill Shake Milton’s former role as the do-it-all leader of the Mustangs. Ethan Chargois is the final returning starter for SMU. Chargois started 24 games as a freshman, averaging 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds. Everett Ray and William Douglas will both be sophomores this season and should see some extended playing time. SMU will have two transfers joining the team, Nat Dixon and Isiaha Mike. Dixon is a grad transfer from Chattanooga who started 30 games last year, averaging 13.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists. Mike, who will see playing time this year after sitting out last season, averaged 11.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists as a freshman at Duquesne. SMU will also bring in three freshmen to compete for playing time. If the Mustangs can have better injury luck in 2018-19, there is enough talent on the roster to get back to competing in the AAC and potentially back to the NCAA Tournament.

Looking back at what could have been. Here are the predicted finishing spots in the league and the ranking for a few Valley teams

                        #2 - Illinois State - 66
                        #3 - Southern Illinois - 76
                        #4 - Bradley - 91
                        #5 - Valparaiso - 112

It's good to see Hinson and Bradley moving up in the standings, but are they moving up or is the rest of the league moving down?

Not many quality wins and certainly no quality losses in that league.

The fact that they are STILL lower than WSU isn't lost on them. "We get very little respect with this ranking. Meanwhile (and I hate to bring it up again) but this ranking views Wichita State will have a better team than us. Right or wrong this let's you see the perception gap between our programs."

Anyone take a vacation to that one perception gap out in northern Arizona this summer?
