  • Referee questions

I have wondered about who some of these referee's have been lately. I know in the Valley I got used to seeing some of the same ones do our games. With the move to the American I was wondering will this change the pool that is available. The Oklahoma State game was imo horrible both ways and the game last night I felt they were on the verge of losing control. In the past if we played at venue outside of CKA ie a big 12 team then it was Valley refs and if a team played here it was their conference refs. Don't know if this was true but just seemed to be the case. If some of these refs at away games were American pool guys I think I prefer the Valley pool. Just sayin

You are correct. Without getting into too many of the gory details, the American uses Mark Whitehead as its supervisor/coordinator of men's basketball officials, who has a similar role with the SEC, Atlantic Sun and others.

Previously, we'd shared with assignors that helped cover the Big 12, Conference USA, Ohio Valley specifically, that also used guys featured in the Big Ten and smaller college (Summit, D-II's, etc) footprint across the upper midwest.

So yes, long story short, I'd expect to see a lot more guys who typically work SEC games this year than our usual Big Ten/Big XII guys.

I think those were the unpopular Big 12 refs.

I think I heard Dave Dahl mention one of last night's refs as someone they (he and MKennedy) had known for years. Sounded respectful of his abilities. Can't tell you the name though.

        Randy Heimerman?
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

Said something about this ref watching another AAC school and being impressed with how really good that team was.

I believe Heimerman was the calm and collected one last night that listened to both coaches after the other refs T'ed them up.

I hope it wasn't the guy that Marshall seemed to have a problem with right before the short ref gave him a T

Maybe he said something like, "I hope your fellow refs can pull their heads out!"

I think that it was just after he told Shaq (while pointing at his chest from close range) that if anyone would say something to the ref, it would be him. Then two minutes later, he was pointing over the ref to the other one making his point and drew the technical. lol

Shaq's T was b.s. He was VERY calm when he was POLITELY walking over to tell the A.S kid that he would rip his vocal chords out of his pencil neck if he kept throwing elbows and grabbing him. I tell ya.

I was thinking back over Shaq's career, and couldn't remember any other time he got a T. Then I noticed that his Mom posted on Facebook that he'd never had one before, going back to high school.

Clarence Armstrong ranked 30 (does BE, AAC, MVC, SEC, PAC10, ACC games it looks like)
Randy Heimerman ranked 122 (MVC, AAC, MWC, Summit, Big Sky)
Andrew Walton ranked 185 (B12, MVC, AAC, CUSA)

                    ratings from Ken Pom.

The ref that Marshall got a T was the most experience and has exposure all over the U.S. Has done 14 games in 19 days, 4 games in a row.

Interesting. I don't pay for KenPom; I had no idea there was a rating system for refs. Briefly, how are they rated?

                  • #14
Ultimately he is rating them based on opponent quality and game competitiveness of games they do. With the logic being the best will work in tougher conferences and big games.

Unfortunately we keep getting the same Dutch guy who is notorious for taking pleasure in going against home teams and coaches with large crowds. I believe his name is Robben De Schökkehaus, or something like that.
