Just breaking on Twitter, sources saying Gregg will meet with North Carolina State this afternoon.
Must be so emotionally challenging to be a coach in D1. To go from coaching and winning the last game of the seaon, the next day celebrating with the home town crowd, the next day possiblly interviewing for a new job with the expectation that you'll accept or turn it down over a 24-48 hour time period. I don't know if I could handle that kind of timeline in my life.
OTOH, Coach Marshall is in a great position. He has a very good job at Wichita State were the money he is making goes a long way. At worst, he is going to get a nice increaase in compensation whether he stays or goes and while he is considering his option he gets to go to the Final Four. No doubt there is an emotional tug of war but the perks ain't bad either when you reach the level 3G is at.

I think Chris and John would both be viable candidates although perhaps with less cache the many Shocker fans might like.
Chris might give us the best shot at keeping all of our incoming recruits as I'm sure he was integral in the recruiting process.
John might be a sentimental favorite. I know he was one of my all-time favorite Shockers. (And don't even think about comparing him to Randy Smithson)
The 3 that have been mentioned elsewhere as showing interest are Chris, Danny Manning and Scott Sutton.
Pat Knight's name has also been mentioned.
Scott Sutton is an interesting name to me. Not sure how I feel about Pat Knight. For some reason Danny Manning just doesn't do it for me.
Of all the names mentioned as potential replacements, I would accept any of them and back them 100%...EXCEPT Danny Manning. I cannot describe how badly that would piss me off. It would reach the point that I might not renew season tickets.
Sutton, Jans and Cooper are all unspectacular but solid options. Sutton is the most known commodity of the three, and I am sure he would win here with the incredible resources we have to offer (as compared to the pathetic treasury he has available at ORU).
Cooper and Jans are relative unknowns at this level. I have tremendous confidence in Cooper, and I believe he is one year away from being the PERFECT candidate for our job. However, if the opening comes up this year instead, he should definitely be looked at. He has done miraculous things at Tennessee State when you consider the disaster he walked into.
Jans, as mentioned, could probably keep the recruiting class in tact and has had success at the JUCO level. Probably the highest risk candidate of the three.
I am sure we would gauge interest of other names like Pat Knight, Dino Gaudio, and maybe Bruce Pearl, etc.
I don't know how I would feel about Pat Knight. On the surface it may appear that he is not a great coach. But only 2 years at a school where it's pretty tough to win at...seems pretty rough. I think he COULD be a pretty darn good coach if given the right situation. Definately can't question his character.
Not saying I would necessarily want him bad here at WSU, but I think he has the makeup of being a good coach.
I don't want to see Manning or Sutton. Just not sure what other viable options are out there. It's impressive what Cooper has done in such a short time at Tennessee State, but would like to see him continue that path before really going after him hard. Cooper would be a risk right now IMHO. I hope it works out for him and he is our coach someday though, would love that.

Knight from just this board or from other sources as having interest? Sutton is on the bottom of the list for me.
Probably more from this board. The thing about Knight and Sutton are you really hiring the best coach or the candidates with the best coaches as fathers.
I think Jans and Coop have both paid there dues and are viable candidates.
I'm sure there are at least a handful of other good candidates.
I will add that I hope Sexton has at least started brainstorming should he need to fill a position soon. I would imagine he would have some ideas...at least I would hope. I know Schaus always kept a list of potential candidates should it come to that. Networking is HUGE in the world of college athletics, hopefully Sexton has been working on his.

Not surprising. I really can't blame the guy and his style of play would do well in the ACC. I know it's 3rd fiddle in the state of NC, but I don't think that would deter HCGM.
Hopefully they don't offer him.

I'm sure he is way beyond brainstorming.
I hope so. He is a pretty smart guy and he's gonna have to be on the ball. I am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Just kind of nervous. The one good thing is WSU is an attractive job and if he gets any kind of committee together it should go pretty smoothly.
Time is not on our side should it come down that we are looking for a new coach. Gonna have to be swift, but not just jump on anyone.

I'm sure he has a list. I'm sure he and President Beggs have had discussions about that as well as what they might be able to do to retain 3G. Speaking of Jim Schaus my guess is Eric has also made contact with Jim to get his input.
If 3G does decide to leave I'm sure Eric will get his input especially regarding Chris Jans.
I really hope 3G stays, but for some reason I am not all that worried about making a good hire if he does leave.

I'm not as worried this time around as I was when Turgeon left. Mainly because we were successfull in finding a good replacement then so why couldn't we again? This wasn't a good job when Turgeon took over, it was a very good job when Marshall took over (even with a bare cupboard) and it's still a great job now.
Should we need a new coach we have a good amount of experience coming back next year that a solid hire could still have a winning season next year. I doubt any of the seniors would transfer unless they just absoluetly hated the new hire...which again is unlikely IMHO. Hopefully we could get a good enough replacement to keep the recruits.
WSU is an outstanding job and the coaching community knows this. We will have good candidates. It's just a matter of Sexton recognizing the coach that will fit the best and give us the best chances at continuing success.
Hopefully this will be behind us within the next few days and we won't have to worry about anything but giving Gregg a nice raise. I still think an extension and raise has been in the works, but perhaps Marshall is holding off on agreeing to anything until he knows where he stands elsewhere.

Just took a glance at Tennessee State's roster. All freshman and sophomores, plus three juniors. They lose nothing from this season's team that went 10-8 in the OVC (their first winning record in conference play in about a decade).
This was just Coop's second season, and there was a complete housecleaning/mutiny when he took over. If I remember right he had just 6 scholarship players that first year.
That is quite the foundation. He's gonna be a hot name in the next year or two.
I'm really starting to warm up to Jans. As long as we don't give him a Lowery contract. Give him a low base salary with the whole contract based around NCAA berths and other accomplishments. Hopefully we wouldn't lose any recruits either. If we end up turning this program into an assistant to head coach factory, I'd be fine with that.
