Addendum: Bohm got his dinger on Sunday. Game 51. Two-run shot. Raised his average to .310 on the year.

    That is quite mystifying.

Mystifying fact: On Saturday, weather permitting, Alec Bohm will play his 50th minor league game vs the Delmarva Shorebirds in Low A ball. Through 48 games he has yet to hit a single home run in 167 ABs. He and Vickers (who has many fewer ABs) are the last remaining pro Shockers without a dinger. You never know.

Hayes's numbers ended up being roughly equivalent to Kyle Funkhouser's (though in less innings since Funk is a starter). Funkhouser was an All-American at Louisville and a first round draft pick.

    Connecticut Tigers stats

I don't want to diminish the accomplishments of a former Shocker, but some perspective is in order. Short-season A ball is one level above rookie, and is where a good number of newly drafted college players (other than those picked in the early rounds) start out. If he were doing that in full-season A ball, it would be impressive. His K/IP (13/21.1) and K/BB (13/7) rates are mediocre. There are eight pitchers on his team with better ERAs (having between 3.0 and 23.2 IP - four of them have 10+ IP).

He teammate, Joe Navilhon (USC, 21st round pick, same age as John), has a 0.38 ERA in 23.2 IP, 26 K, 5 BB.

All of that said, it's certainly not a bad start and something to build on. Perhaps with some maturity, new coaches and perspectives he'll put it together.

If any Shocker baseball fan wants to be driven absolutely crazy, take a peek at John Hayes's stats so far in A ball this summer.

Wichitans may get an opportunity to see former Shocker Jordan Cooper against the Wingnuts this season. He signed an independent contract with the T-Bones. He started the season with AAA in the Cleveland organization.

Good to be back in Surprise in time to watch Brian Flynn start the intrasquad game striking out all 3 he faced, including Mondesi & Cuthbert

If Flynn can get his velocity back up, he'll be a very difficult guy to send to Omaha. But from what I understand, he has options left. That means if there's someone else vying for that last spot who the coaches also like, yet doesn't have options left (and thereby must be DFA'd or released), Flynn will go down by default.

Hope these guys make rosters. Have a feeling we won't be sponsoring any more MLB products for a while.

So close to a roster spot last year, Brian Flynn fights for Royals bullpen role.

"A few days ago the Yankees surprisingly called up outfielder Taylor Dugas just so he could sit on the bench while Carlos Beltran was dealing with a sore ribcage. Sitting on the bench knowing you’re going to sent back down in a few days stinks — Dugas was sent down yesterday, sure enough — but being added to the 40-man roster and spending even one day in MLB comes with major perks, as MLBPA director of communications Greg Borris explained to Brendan Kuty.

First and foremost, the player gets the pro-rated portion of the $507,500 minimum salary, which works out to $2,773.22 per day during the regular season. Dugas was making approximately that per month in the minors. Players are also entitled to a portion of the MLBPA’s licensing program revenue (baseball cards, video games, etc.) and they start accruing service time towards pension benefits. And finally, the big thing is health care for them and their families. They get access to the league’s high-quality yet affordable health care program for life after just one day in the show. Getting called up for a day might sound disappointing, but man, the benefits are as good as it gets."
