    McCoola and Schermerhorn

I had the opportunity to watch Nick McCoola & Derek Schermerhorn play last night in Lincoln, Neb. Both are playing for the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association. Their manager is former Cub and Cardinal reliever Les Lancaster.

Anyway, they got beat 8-1 by Lincoln, and both struggled a bit. It was nice, however, to see them still plugging away. You can find stats and more on them at http://www.xsbaseball.com . Both have been regulars this year, and have over 200 AB's on the season.

Anthony Capra and Dusty Coleman have both been called up to Advanced Class A (Stockton) with the A's. Both have made impacts early with their new club.

Starter Anthony Capra fanned nine in 4.2 innings, while Derrick Gordon struck out six, Nick Walters added four strikeouts, and winning pitcher Mickey Storey collected four strikeouts in the contest.
The Ports totaled 14 hits in the contest, and Wichita State product Dusty Coleman secured the victory for Stockton with the game-winning RBI single in the tenth inning.

I stumbled across this. Former Shocker signee Jonathan Gilmore, who was originally drafted by the Braves, was traded to the White Sox in the Javier Vasquez deal.

Gilmore, 20, combined to hit .294 (106-360) with 24 doubles, four home runs and 35 RBI in 94 games with Advanced Rookie Danville and Class A Rome in 2008. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound third baseman was named to the Appalachian League postseason All-Star Team after hitting .337 (87-258) with four homers and 31 RBI at Danville. He originally was selected as a sandwich pick (33rd overall) in the June 2007 First-Year Player Draft.

Edwin Bellorin who was starting at Omaha has left the team for personal reasons. Cody Clark will be the starter.

It looks like Pelfrey is doing pretty good so far this year.

Mike Pelfrey's seven shutout innings lead New York Mets past Colorado Rockies, 5-0

DENVER - Mike Pelfrey concluded his seven shutout innings Thursday by throwing a split-fingered fastball to Ryan Spilborghs. The Colorado right fielder flied out to right, and Pelfrey strode calmly off the mound, having lifted the Mets from a four-game malaise.

That pitch selection illuminated part of why Pelfrey has been so effective of late, and his demeanor explained the rest. By diversifying his repertoire and learning to maintain a calm focus while pitching, Pelfrey has been the Mets' most effective starter in the early part of this troubled season.

He pitched the Mets to a 5-0 win over the Rockies Thursday to end a four-game losing streak and lift his record to 2-0, with a 1.38 ERA. The game was not free of the sloppy moments that have troubled these Mets (3-6) of late, but just as a struggling rotation can overshadow bright spots, excellent starting pitching can turn ugly plays into afterthoughts.

Jared had gotten it figured-out near the end of the '07 season after dramatically changing his arm slot. I don't know if he's still using the side-arm / submarine delivery, but that can be very effective for a short reliever.

                        Good for Jared.
