  • Utah Tech threw everything they had at us in Game 1 to try and get at least one win? If so, smart on their part, otherwise they lose all four.

These guys can swing the bat but I don't think they knew if they had any pitching at all. The guy they threw Wednesday was a guy who gave them 3 good innings in their only win the weekend before. It's pitching by committee until someone develops. They have a couple of decent arms but not a lot afterwards.

And the well is somewhat dry for them in the pen now.

        • Well done Mr. Adler. Nice pitching!

          • Getting GAdler's A game today. 1 hit, 1 walk and 8Ks through 4. 4 home runs for the Shocks and it's 7-0 top 5.

Thornhill, Stroh, Pennington and Rodden have all gone yard in the back half of the twin bill so far.

Maybe I DO need to spend more time with them

Very much so. 10-0 final. Gadler and Mulhollon combine on a 1 hitter. 13Ks and just 2 walks.

With the exception of not getting to play a few guys that I'm sure they would have liked to seen, just about a perfect day.

They will come home 4-3 on the road, and if not for 1 pitch, easily could have been 5-2 and I think most people would be pleased.

Snead, Mulhollon and Favors have been mostly good out of the pen (all have loads of arm talent).

                    Some encouraging signs.

Now we get 9 of 10 at home before going to Creighton. Let's see if they can put together a dominate stretch of good baseball and make things interesting.

                    • Just to point out, last year’s team was 5-18 in true road games.

                      • Good finish to the series. Now need to build some momentum over the next 8 games before they play OU.

OU may have revenge on their mind after the 18-0 thrashing at the hands of the Shocks late last season.

Very possibly, but they probably should be concentrating on the present as they are under .500 playing a mundane schedule with 6 of the 7 games at home. At least early, they are not close to the same team that ended up #2 last season.

                            • Go Shockers - Adler Named Pitcher of the Week, Pennington to Honor Roll

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State right-handed pitcher Grant Adler was named American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week and infielder Garrett Pennington was selected to the conference's weekly Honor Roll.

Adler was spectacular in his second WSU start, improving to 2-0 for the season with six dominant innings in the Shockers run-rule victory Sunday at Utah Tech. The Wichita native struck out 11 and allowed just one base hit while walking two. He struck out two batters in each of his first five innings and did not allow a Trailblazers runner to reach third base. Adler is the first WSU pitcher to record double-digit strikeouts in a game since Jace Kaminska fanned 12 at Houston on April 1, 2022, and the first WSU conference Pitcher of the Week since Cameron Bye claimed the honor on April 11, 2022.

The former Cowley College standout also picked up the win in his Shocker debut at Long Beach State, surrendering five runs over six innings to help Wichita State claim the series finale.

Pennington delivered a monster series against Utah Tech, going a staggering 11-for-19 (.579) against the Trailblazers with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI. At one point in the series he went 9-for-10, highlighted by a stretch of hits in five consecutive at-bats. The transfer from Central Missouri provided the most important hit of the series on Friday, slicing a go-ahead double down the right field line to give WSU the lead in extra innings, then followed up his heroics by homering in both games of the doubleheader on Saturday to power the Shockers to a series win.

For the season, Pennington leads the Shockers in batting average (.469), on-base percentage (.469) and slugging percentage (.875), while striking out just once in 32 at-bats.

                              • Not to sound like Dave Dahl (ok, probably sounding a lot like Dave Dahl) but I found this statistic encouraging.

Going into the season, without question our most reliable pitcher was Cameron Bye (and he very well might be again). But he had a very rough road trip.

Our pitching numbers, admittedly a small sample size (but still more than 12% of the season total games), weren't horrible.

ERA 4.71 is better than most recent years. Strikeout to walk ratio over 3. WHIP 1.34 and opponent BA .254 solid at a minimum.

Now take out Cam's numbers and the rest of the team looks like this:

                                ERA 3.90

                                WHIP 1.216

                                Opp BA .231

                                K/BB 3.22

Those numbers are excellent even against so so competition...UT will hit a ton this season and LBSU's strength was their returning batters.

A lot of new guys putting up some solid numbers early in the year. Encouraging, to me at least.

As I've said several times though, the absence of a Friday guy/stopper may cause problems all season. You'd give up a couple or three 4.5.6 decent starters for a guy that was good for 6-8 innings and 0-3 runs every series.
