Also, I thought it was interesting that the spin from Loren Hibbs, who subbed in on Wedge's radio show this past Monday, was that this coaching staff is very inexperienced as a collegiate coaching staff implying that this gig if a far different animal that managing and/or playing at the highest level of baseball. This may indicate that there is some self-awareness and self-evaluation going on with the coaches and I think that is probably a good thing. Whether or not it will produce the desired results moving forward remains to be seen. Clearly these guys know baseball. Whether they have the ability to apply that knowledge in successully building and maintaining a collegiate program at a weather challenged location remains to be seen. I think Scooter has a pretty good idea how tough it is. In 27 years at Charlotte, Scooter had 15 winning seasons and 11 losing seasons and 1 season with a .500 finish. So their is some growth and development needed with the coaching staff as well and that needs to start showing itself soon.
After the UCF series last weekend I had set my sights on the Shocks getting to 20 wins this season as a sign of improving trend to finish off the season. At that time they were 13-27 with 15 games remaining in the regular season. To get to 20 games, I thought they need to finish at 6-9 overall (6-6 in AAC, 0-3 vs OSU, KSU and OU) plus 1 win in the AAC. So, in my mini season, the Shock are 1-2 (1-1 in AAC play). I was counting on them winning this Memphis series. We will see what happens today but if they win today they will be on track.

Memphis Game 3
Interesting top of the 3rd for the Shocks. Strikeout, Cadena hit by pitch, strikeout The single, single, double, single, single and the Shocks have a 5 spot Stewart strikeout ends the at bat.
In the too of the 4th 3 more singles capped by a 2-out, 2-run single by Brock Rodden puts the Shocks up 7-0.
A 2-run homer by Ross Cadena in the top of the 6th extends the Shocker lead to 9-0.
Memphis gets to Payton Tolle in the 6th. Adam Ketelson comes in with the bases loaded and no outs and 1 run across for Memphis. Does a pretty good job but Memphis does push across 2 of the inherited runners. Shocks lead 9-3 after 6 innings.
Jordan Roger's led off the 7th with a single to right but was called out at second trying to stretch it into a double. Mike and Gerig, calling the game, both thought he was clearly safe. Garrett Kocis followed with a long home run to center to make it 10-3.
Ketelson pitched a 1-2-3 7th. With 2 outs and a runner on 1st Ketelson was replaced by Ryan Stuempfig. Not sure why but Stuempfig did get the final out of the inning in an infield pop up.
In the top of the 9th Stuempfig gave up a single, got a fly ball out to left and then gave up a walk. Conner Holden was then brought into try to finish it off. Conner induced a foul pop to 3rd for the 2nd out but then 3-run homer to left to make it 10-6. Conner than got a ground ball to 1st for the final out of the game.
Shockers 10-13-0
Memphis 6-9-0
A somewhat similar game to yesterday in that the Shockers offense was pretty efficient. The Shockers did not get nearly as much charity from the Tigers today though as Memphis pitchers only walked 1 and hit 1 batter with no wild pitches and no errors on the Memphis defense. The pitching was mostly good with the exception of a couple of innings where Memphis scored all 6 of their runs. This seems to be a bad habit with Shocker pitching. It was good to see a couple of he old guard contribute (Cadena and Kocis) although it's only one game and was MIA for most of the season.
So the Shocks backed up the win yesterday and showed they could win a series although it was Memphis.
I guess the next step would be to show they can win a midweek game but I'm not betting on that. After the K-State game the Shocks will have 7 games in a row at home not that the home field has helped much. AAC series vs Houston and Tulane and the final non-con game of the year vs OU. These games will provide a much better measuring stick as to whether this weekend represents a step forward or not.Last edited by 1972Shocker; May 1, 2022, 05:59 PM.
