  • Shox vs. Alcorn St. Games 1 & 2

Unbelievably we are playing baseball tonight at the eck. It has rained all day and it is still raining- all be it very lightly.

Mormann doesn't start off the best. He hit a batter and gave up a single to put 2 runners on base with no one out. Fortunately he was able to pitch his way out of it. 0-0 at the end of the top of the first.

Although Alcorn St. has a terrible record right now: 3-16 and a terrible rpi: 262 they did win their conference last year (SWAC). They are also picked to win it again this year. So if they do win their conference they will have enough wins by the end of the season that they shouldn't be a total rpi killer.

WSU comes into the game with a rpi of 35.

Donnie Lambert gets the first hit of the day for the Shox to extend his hitting streak to 7 straight games. Coy walks and Lambert steals third on ball 4. Shox had runners on third and first with 2 outs. Casey G. also walked to load the bases. Tyler Coughenhour walks to put the Shox up 1-0. Dayne Parker also walks after starting off 0-2 to put the Shox up 2-0.

Ryan Hege pops it up to end the inning. Shox lead 2-0 after one.

Alcorn opened the 2nd with a triple, the next batter grounds out to first but drives a run in. The next batter gets a base hit right up the middle. The batter takes second on a wild pitch. The next batter pops up, the following batter walks to put runners on first and second with 2 outs. Mormann gives up an infield single but the inning ends when one of their runners runs past third and gets thrown out trying to go back . Shox still up 2-1. Mormann not looking too good right now.

Josh Halbert opens the second with a hard infield hit right at the SS who doesn't handle it and Josh gets to first on an error. Doggett walks to put runners at first and second with nobody out. The pitcher spins and picks Josh Halbert off at second for the first out. Kevin Hall pops up for the second out and Doggett was stealing (he had the base stolen and had to return to first). Doggett then steals second on the first pitch to Donnie Lambert. Lambert gets a double. Doggett scores, Shox 3-1. Lambert moves to third on a wild pitch. Coy walks to put runners on the corners with 2 outs. Casey swings on the first pitch for a long fly out. Shox leave 2 base runners but lead 3-1 after 2.

Tyler Coughenhour starts the third with a walk. Coughenhour steals second. Parker hit what looked like a double play ball but with Coughenhour stealing second stays out of the double play. Ryan Hege hits a high drive to centerfield that is caught but allows Coughenhour to tag and go to third. Josh Halbert gets a hit to score Coughenhour. Shox 4-1 with Halbert on first and 2 outs. Halbert steals second. Doggett flies out to end the inning. After 3 innings, Shox 4-1.

Kyle Bouman comes in to pitch for the Shockers to start the 4th. The first batter flies out to right field. Kyle strikes out the second batter. The third batter hits a shallow fly ball that falls in front of Lambert for a base hit. The next batter hits a single up the middle. Alcorn now has runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. The last batter flies out to end the inning. Shox 4-1.

Kevin Hall opens the fourth by flying out. Donnie Lambert hits a ball off the fence for a stand up triple. Coy hits a very high ball that the outfielder catches on the edge of the warning track. I think the wind kept that ball in the park. Lambert tags and scores to put the Shox up 5-1. Casey G. drives the ball to left for a fly out. After 4 complete Shox 5-1.

The first batter for Alcorn in the fifth grounds out, the second batter hits a double and advance to third on a bad throw from Doggett. Doggett gets an error allowing the batter to advance to third. The next batter grounds out to Halbert, but the runner scores. Shox 5-2 with 2 outs.

Kyle strikes out the last batter. Halfway thru the game the Shox lead 5-2.

A little too close for my taste.
