I caught the last 6.5 innings of today's FWS Game 2 which in many ways seemed like a replay of Game 1.
Solid pitching, good defense (no errors by either team) and Kevin Hall clearly standing out as the offensive catalyst.
Kevin went 5 for 5 with 2 bunt singles, 4 stolen bases and 2 runs scored including the game winner in the bottom of the 9th.
Kyle Vail and Kyle Bouman, 2 Freshmen LHP's, looked sharp combining to pitch a total of 7.2 innings with Vail allowing 1 run and combining for 10 K's vs only 2 BB's.
Drew Rainey started for the Black team and pitched 3 scoreless innings. Mitch Mormann (Gold) and Zach Beringer (Black) also saw action. They were both bringing pretty good heat but neither one had especially great command.
However, the most impressive pitching performance was Foster Vielock who allowed only 1 hit in 3 scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Gold.
TJ McGreevey had a poor outing giving up the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the 9th on 2 hits, 1 walk and a wild ptich.
Tyler Coughenour drove in the winning run with a double to deep right center. The ball was well hit but it was hit pretty high. Connor Knight was in right and he did not appear to take the best route to the ball. Maybe Don Lambert gets to that ball, maybe he doesn't. Connor did have 2 hits and was the only player other than Kevin Hall with more than 1 hit.
Casey Gillaspie did get his 1st hit of the series but he also struck out 3 times.
Don Lambert had the play of the game with a picture perfect throw to 3rd base (air mail all the way) to nail Walker Davidson trying to advance from 2nd to 3rd on a fairly well hit fly ball to right.
We will be very solid defensively in the outfield. I'm hoping Kevin Hall has finally figured out what he needs to do to be successful offensively. He can be a disruptive force if he can play like he has so far. If he does, this will be his team.
3rd Base and Catcher are the big question marks. I think we can adequately man 3rd between Dayne Parker, Aaron Rea and perhaps Sam Hall. So far no one is standing out to me at Catcher.
