  • Wichita State at Memphis (New Schedule)

Wichita State's series opener at Memphis scheduled for Thurs., May 17 at 6:30 p.m. has been postponed due to rain.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Fri., May 18 at 2 p.m. Both games will be nine innings.

I suppose the biggest negative to this is that our Game 1 starter who I presume would be the pick to pitch Game 1 in the AAC Championship on Tuesday will lose a day of rest. Whether or not that will influence the pitching rotation in this series or in the AAC Championship is hard to say.

This could make the possibility of getting the 7th seed of more importance. The 8th seed plays on Tuesday evening but the 7th seed doesn't play until Wednesday morning.

In order to capture the 7th seed the Shocks need to go 3-0 and have Tulane go 1-2 or worse against UCF or the Shocks need to go 2-1 and have Tulane go 0-3 against UCF.

Wichita State baseball heads to Memphis with postseason at stake

Even if WSU sweeps Memphis (19-34) to finish 10-13-1 in AAC play, the Shockers likely need to at the very least play for a championship at the AAC tournament in Clearwater, Fla. next week if they hope to make it.

Taylor is being very generous in his assessment. Why would anyone take even a second look at an eighth place team with a league record of 7-13 (and 7-11 against the RPI top 50), with an RPI that has skidded all the way to 44th (Warren Nolan), unless maybe they were in the SEC where the NCAA likes to maximize its harvest? And maybe not even then. The Shocks had better plan to win or go home, I'd say.

Reaching the title game in Clearwater likely involves tacking on 3 additional Top 50 wins and would peg the RPI in the 28-32 range if coupled with a sweep this weekend. I think that's the resume he's basing the statement on.

Yeah, objectively, a sweep this weekend followed by reaching the AACT final probably puts the resume in non-UNI basketball level of at-large discussion.

Shocks up 2-0 to the 4th in Game 1. Codi worked around trouble in each of the first couple innings before settling in for 1-2-3 third inning. 49 pitches so far for him.

Potential drawback of the Tuesday AACT timeslot. Especially since a recovery day was lost for the Game 1 starter when yesterday's game was pushed to today.

Yea, Tulane did their part in giving up the late 3 run lead in Game 1 vs. UCF. Would be nice to get as much of a breather for Codi as possible.

Interestingly, things are setting up for ECU to tumble all the way to the 4 seed if results hold this afternoon. USF has a chance to grab 2nd with a win in the rubber match vs. UC (USF leads 3-0 in the 1st) coupled with a UConn win over ECU in their rubber match (UConn leads 3-1 in the 5th). UConn would hold the tiebreaker over ECU for 3rd if they hang on.

Memphis ties it at 2 apiece in the 6th on a RBI groundout followed by a solo blast. Shocker hitters will need to offer Jobu better rum these next few innings.

Codi at 91 pitches through 6 with Cody Tyler loosening up, that may be it for him today.

Shocks regain the lead with a 1 out RBI single from Ritter in the 7th. Runners at 1st and 2nd, 1 out for Jenista with Bohm on deck.

Breathing room would be nice here.

No further damage inflicted by WSU, 3-2 good guys to the stretch.

Cody Tyler on in reflief - hopefully we can preserve the win for Codi, he pitched really well in the middle innings.

Smooth sailing for Cody in 7th, couple strikeouts and a pop up. 3-2 to the 8th.

Memphis with a 1 out triple in the 8th and their cleanup hitter batting. Chandler Sanburn on for Cody Tyler.
