While not immediately, the course of collegiate athletics is in the midst of what will ultimately be monumental changes. Whether that’s good or bad for sports in general and football specifically remains to be seen.

In a historic ruling Wednesday afternoon, the Chicago regional office of the National Labor Relations Board ruled that Northwestern football players meet the standards under federal guidelines to form a union. The initial petition was filed by the National College Players Association on behalf of former Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter and the College Athletes Players Association (CAPA), and had the backing of the United Steelworkers union.

The NLRB ruled essentially what CAPA had argued in stating its case: football players are employees of the university.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. You know what you signed up for when you accepted that scholarship. If the NCAA model (however skewed it might really be) isn't acceptable for you, go play in Canada or go play arena football for $100 a game (or whatever paltry amount it is) for the three years before being eligible for the NFL Draft. Go play a lower level of NCAA ball or even NAIA ball where the time demands are not nearly as great and you can get that part-time job to work to pay for school. Stop thinking that the only option for playing football after high school is major college football at the FBS level.

Can't tell if you are being sarcastic. Are you complaining that students and grad students are being shorted or pointing out the hypocrisy of the student athletes that think they are entitled to more than what they agreed to?

The National Labor Relations Board on Monday overturned a historic ruling that gave Northwestern University football players the go-ahead to form the nation’s first college athletes’ union, saying the prospect of union and non-union teams could throw off the competitive balance in college football.

The decision throws out a March 2014 ruling by a regional NLRB director in Chicago who said that the football players are effectively school employees and entitled to organize. Monday’s decision did not directly address the question of whether football players are employees.
