Once a school asks for permission to talk to a coach it is about all over. I'm sure Martin's agent has all but the fine points of a contract worked.

Think about it...
-After 3G knew he was out of the running for the USC job, by most accounts due to the price he thought he needed to take the career risk, he re-upped with WSU complete with an official press release and quote. Do we really not think that when Gregg gave the okay for that process to move forward at WSU he wasn't well aware that FM was in serious negotiations with USC, and might vacate his K-State spot? Due to their network, guys like Marshall (and Martin obviously) know a lot more about these coaching rumors than Joe Public. You don't make an announcement like Marshall made on Saturday if you think another job you might have any degree of interest in might be getting ready to open up.
-Marshall's a bit of a narcissistic control-freak hot-head. Martin's a bit of a narcissistic control-freak hot-head. K-State's new AD by all account appears to fit a similar mold as well. It's been reported numerous times that Marshall and Martin have some degree of relationship. Do we not think Marshall - if he had a sliver of interest in the K-State job - would make a quick call to Martin and get his take on the boss who appears to be the sole reason Martin's leaving town? That alone would be enough to nuke any sliver of interest Marshall might have for the K-State job. Further, do we not think that Marshall could use basic psychology and deduce that his personality type and Currie's personality type would be a no-go together. If Martin doesn't play well with Currie, Marshall's not going to play well with Currie. Pretty simple.
-Gregg LOVES him some golf. Manhattan, and the area surrounding, has one golf course that's not a joke. Let's see, in the Wichita area we have... Flint Hills, Prairie Dunes, Crestview's 36 holes (where the Marshall's live), Wichita County Club, Sand Hills Station, and any number of other decent public and private courses. It's not even a comparison. If you're a golfer, Wichita is certainly not heaven, but Manhattan is pretty close to hell.
-Lastly, outside of conference affiliation (which is a given biggie), what do you gain by moving from WSU to K-State? It's a wash at best, with a few items in K-State's favor, and a few in ours.

How about Larry Eustachy to KSU? Tim Floyd? Matt Doherty? Danny Manning? Dana Altman?
Are there any other KSU connections in the coaching community they could target?Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

Frank Martin's KSU teams played tougher than anything Fertilizer U has seen in over 20 years. Frank Martin was exactly what KSU needed to stay competitive against sKUm and other Big 12 schools. Silo-Tech will now slip back into obscurity where the highlight of the season will be to get pounded by 25 at Allen Fieldhouse West every year and then wait for their NIT seeding with bated breath in March.

I would think that of the available coaches that are most likely to leave, (which excludes Shaka Smart, et al.,) Jankovitch makes the most sense. Of the guys SubGod listed, Eustachy is one fall from the wagon away from turning your program into a train wreck, Tim Floyd had trouble follow him everywhere he went, Doherty was a disaster. Each of those guys seems like a potential Bob Huggins repeat. Danny Manning is unproven, and Dana Altman has been given the keys to heaven from Nike. So I don't see any of those working. I'm having trouble coming up with any more names that are within the legitimate realm of possibility.

From one of the K-State fan forums:
Cole Manbeck ? @Cole_Manbeck
Prominent donors to K-State athletics have told me they're done giving money to K-State if Frank Martin is gone and John Currie remainsNo, you can't blame Currie yet. We still have to see what kind of hire he will make. But, mark my words if we hire some mid-major coach that's a real up and comer we are screwed. We need a big name and a big splash, because those are the only people who can recruit to Manhattan.Last edited by 1972Shocker; March 26, 2012, 02:34 PM.

Wonder how much the fact that he would have to go up against his mentor Huggins next year played into his decision. Well, it looks like it's done and I'm not going to kick K-State fans when they are down. This could have been us, guys, and scrambling at the last minute for a new coach that can keep your incoming recruits can't be much fun.
