  • Representatives from the Catholic 7 held discussions in New York on Wednesday that included potential future commissioners of the league as well as its television deal, sources said.

Just saw this. Take note that it is going to be a 12 team league if they get the FOX deal. Of course they are going to keep more money than the other 5 schools. I wonder how much that uneveness will keep schools from joining?

We don't know for sure that they'll take more. I don't think Fox will let them as nobody of significance will join with that deal. ESPN is the only one that has reported that. CBS, NBS, SI haven't said anything about an uneven distribution.

If they go to 12, odds are CU is gone. Unless they don't want to go west of STL. Xavier and Butler are in for sure. I'd be surprised if Dayton isn't in. Some seem to think Fox will convince them to add Duquesne for Pittsburgh. SLU is probably in because of STL. There have been rumors about VCU talks heating up, but I'm still not sure the C7 take a public.

      • Catholic 7: Grading the Appeal of Potential Candidates for Their New Conference

Wichita State graded a B+ add to Catholic 7 - seems odd

Seems odd too high or odd to low? I certainly wouldn't expect WSU to be included in an 12 team conference. The B+ rating was as high as Dayton and St Louis.

          • Is this the first time a national writer has mentioned WSU as being a fit for them? He's pretty much saying what I believe some of us have thought. Perhaps if they go to 14. The talk about the 7 taking a bigger share of the TV money might discourge some. The 7 seem to think pretty high about themselves.

I don't think they will stop at 10 for very long. Fox is offering a lot of money and probably would want more games.

            • This should all play out soon. If there are tv deals on the table, the rest should fall in line soon.

              • From what I've seen, Fox is pushing them to go to 12. With the new channel they're starting, they want content and this could be very good basketball content. I still don't understand the appeal of SLU outside of the market. I don't see them sustaining without Majerus and by all accounts, Father Biondi(sp) is a real pain in the neck to work with. That should probably pull their grade down.... I haven't read the linked article yet but will shortly. Another plus about WSU, outside of fan support, investment and facilities is that we are in a basketball crazy state and if we were a part of this conference, interest would most likely pick up from the casual fan and more TV's would tune into watch not only us, but other conference games as well.

I wouldn't expect a TV deal announced until the C7 knows what it's doing and who they're going to be adding. Fox really wants them, but they want them because of the names rumored to join. If something goes wrong and that doesn't happen, they don't want to be on the hook for 500mil.

                  • I agree sub. I just think that if they get serious with fox, Fox might actually get a little input into markets and schools. Thats just my opinion.

                    • I have no doubt that Fox will have influence in this as the C7 wants the best payday they can get. At this point, I think Butler, Xavier and Creighton are pretty much a sure thing to get to 10. 11 & 12 are the questions. I've seen a lot of C7 talk about not being interested in Dayton. Solid program but doesn't excite a number of them and basically shares the market with Xavier. SLU has the market but not the following and questions about post Majerus success. VCU is a public in a nice market and a good history. Especially recently. Some are pushing for Duquesne because of Pittsburgh and think Fox might push it too. The Dukes aren't a horrid program and some think a lower level team in a nice market could be accepted. I've seen some talk about George Mason but most feel Georgetown wouldn't allow it as they share a market. Wichita brings an ok market but a basketball crazy state. Also looks to be a better program than SLU and Dayton going forward and would pair up nicely with CU. Gonzaga is in IF they can take care of any travel worries. Some don't like the idea of going C2C as it's what hurt the current BE. But if they could score the Zags AND SMC, it'd be tough not to. I've even seen a few mentions about Detroit. Market obviously.

                      • Detroit isn't on par with those schools. Hopefully the list of schools is released so we can get an jdea of an impending implosion of conferences.

I agree. It's just one I've seen mentioned elsewhere if they went to 14 or so because of market and being a "fit". Kind of the same reason the Dukes get mentioned, although they have a little success in their more recent past.

Schools that could be looked at for 12+ from what I've seen are: Xavier, Butler, Creighton, Dayton, SLU, VCU, Richmond, Wichita, Detroit, Duquesne, Gonzaga, SMS, San Francisco, UMass (football issue), UConn (football), Cincinnati (football), George Mason, St. Joseph's and St. Bonny.

Some are definitely long shots at best and there are some who think CU gets left out because of distance. If that happens, SLU and Dayton are both pretty much guaranteed spots as they will want some midwestern flavor for Butler, Xavier, Marquette and DePaul.

We'll see how much geography plays into this and if it trumps basketball success. It's possible they add 5 and those are Xavier, Butler, Dayton, SLU, Duquesne and Richmond. Would still be a strong conference, but not as strong as it could be.

                          • Looking like SDSU will in fact end up back in the MWC as expected. Not sure what the next move is for the BE. Will be interesting to see how they move from here. Will also be interesting to see if Navy is still committed.
