  • I knew the non-football BE schools couldn't be to happy. I said sooner or later. But I didn't think it would be this soon.
"Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.

Did the major one bother them in forming the Big East?

        • The A-10 might try to grab the Big East 7.

The Atlantic 10 has discussed the possibility of a 21-team basketball league in the event that the changing conference landscape makes high-profile Big East schools available, a source with direct knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com Tuesday.

We are going to have to be very proactive and have some luck.

Schools like Duke are a driving force in realignment, by driving down the financial value of major conferences by putting all of their eggs into one basket.

You might be able to get away with that if you're Kentucky, and one of the only schools in your conference doing it, but when numerous schools in one conference do that, it destroys the financial viability of the conference. And so teams start leaving.

Duke and UNC are, to a large part, completely to blame for Maryland leaving the ACC.

Interesting take and there might be some validity to it. Would you say that KU fits that bill as well, or do they simply suck at football?
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Maybe, but schools like Miami, and, to a lesser extent, Boston College, failing to be relevant nationally since being poached by the ACC from the Big East had a larger role IMO.

KU just sucks at football. I think the Jayhawks spend basketball money on their football program, actually. It is part of the reason it takes such a huge TV deal to get them out of Allen Fieldhouse.

                  • How is UNC to blame for Maryland leaving? Maryland wanted a stronger upper northeast presence and will help to carry that mantle by themselves along with Penn State and Rutgers. UNC has spent more money on football over the last 25 years, so they are unlike Duke in that regard.

                        • This needs to be looked into. My hope is that we can form a new conference with schools that put basketball above all other sports. And part of the selection process would be basketball athletic budget, average 80% of arena seats sold. Mandate a certain strength of schedule. Rotate conference tourney to different neutral sites.

Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a "new" conference doesn't get an auto-bid to the NCAA tournament, correct? Or am I thinking football? Or am I not thinking at all?...

You're mostly right. However, with this "new" conference cosisting of 7 teams that have played together for so long, I think it may actually qualify. I'd have to look into it, but I think there's some rule about having at least 6 schools that have been together for x (5?) amount of years before qualifying for an autobid. It was one of the things that the Great West was trying to get to.
