      • Andy Katz believe L'ville could be the front runner for the ACC. Would be a big blow to potentila XII expansion unless they pull off the FSU/Clemson rumors from this summer.

        • Oh boy. This is gonna get really messy. I'm guessing it leads to the ACC, SEC, B1G, and Big 12 all expanding to 16 and the Big East will be less relevant than the MEAC in football. The MWC seems to be in a position to really benefit from this.

I don't fully trust Katz's credibility. This could be a tweet sent as a favor to his good buddy Pitino, with the hope of slowing down the entire process or to simply lobby for Louisville.

If the big 4 conferences, whoever those end up being, get to the number of 16 members each we are all in big trouble. They will leave the NCAA, set their own rules for football playoffs and start up their own NCAA basketball tourney.

Personally I think the TV networks are driving this. They don't want to contract with and spread their money across multiple conferences; they want to only have to cut one deal.

            • Even before Katz there was a lot of talk about L'ville being the choice. They bring a better athletic department as a whole and some are concerned about UConn keeping it's success as they replace the legions that built them. And L'ville definitely has better football. Plus, it would be a blow to the XII. The only way we get to four, 16 team conferences is if the XII folds. The PAC isn't going to expand unless it's with 0U, OSU, Tech and Texas. Or if they can't get Texas, maybe Kansas for basketball.

The BE is done as a major player in football, of which they were borderline anyway, and basketball could be taking a major hit. They've already lost ND, it looks like L'ville and UConn could both be leaving as well. If that happens, it becomes even tougher to pick off other schools as the BE isn't anywhere close to what it once was and is the least stable of the "big boys".

The Big Ten isn't going anywhere, but if they decide to go to 16, you can be pretty certain they'll go after the ACC to fill those two slots. There could be an outside chance of getting KU and MU if they wanted to stay closer, but don't be surprised if they'd go after UNC and maybe Virginia to grow their east coast presence.

The ACC would then take whatever is left in the BE or elsewhere to build back up. There are a lot of crazy scenarios out there depending on who does what and when. Personally, I don't see a break coming no matter what happens with the conferences. But power is trying to be consolidated and the networks are playing a big role in it.

That's kind of what I am thinking that we still may be marching to 4 big 16-team super conferences.

Where are we now numbers wise on conference size:

                SEC = 14, Big12 = 10, Big10 = 14, Pac12 = 12 and the ACC = 11 (sans Maryland)

I saw an interview with Coach K and even he said he was concerned about the ACC.

Will the ACC go the way of the Big East or will the remnants of the Big East and whatever the ACC ends up with be put together in some form for a 5th Super conference.

At that point they will then probably all leave the NCAA and form their own governing body and with the big TV contracts they will start paying their athletes (at least in basketball and football).

Since all this realignment is obviously football driven, I can't see the ACC, no matter how many members they lose, taking in the non-football schools from the Big East. The non-football Big East teams really seem more like A-10 teams. But I don't think the A-10 can't get much bigger and remain stable. Maybe the ACC wiil take the Big East football schools. Then maybe Some of the teams from the A-10 and Big East non-football schools join together. And then the MVC can take in some of the remaining A-10 teams.

                      That seems logical to me.

                      • The MVC wouldn't want what was left over from that BE/A10 merger or whatever you'd call it. The A10 schools we could be interested in are SLU, Butler, Xavier and Dayton. There's no way in hell those four wouldn't get taken to merge with the BE basketball onlies.

Biggest problem with this is that most of the "remaining" A-10 schools are in the eastern half of the conference. This ones that the Valley would want or consider would be a part of that A-10/Big East merge.

Right. I guess the only ones that make since are the ones that would go. I keep hoping all this realignment will end well for us.

We all hope that, but I don't see it happening.

                              • AD Sexton is a firm believer of not rocking the boat for fear of what might happen if he does. I would ask why? What is the Valley going to do, kick us out?

@SubGod22: - how many times have you seen ANY Valley school mentioned as truly being considered to be invited to another conference?

I know I have not seen a single one (Wishing and hoping doesnt count **swomo**).
