It seems that whenever something like happens - bomb in Times Square, mass shootings at a US military base, etc. - there appears to be two kinds of reactions: (a) Some people go, "Hmm. I wonder if this involves some guy with a name like Mohammed who has e-mails from Yemen."; (b) Other people go, "Don't worry, there's no connection to terrorism, and anyway, even if there is, it's all very amateurish, and besides he's most likely an isolated extremist or “lone wolf”.
Unfortunately, everyone in category (b) seems to work for the government.
To the traditional who-ya-gonna-believe-me-or-your-lyin'-eyes cliches, Mayor Bloomberg has now added the inspired line that this was a mentally deranged homegrown amateurish loner with no connection to terrorism that “didn’t like the health care bill”. I do hope they ask this guy his views on the individual mandate. Seriously, initially the three best guesses of the mayor who works a few minutes from ground zero could come up with where: Homegrown, mentally deranged, doesn’t like the healthcare bill. To which I say, stick it up your memory hole Mayor. :-x
My question is: Why do public officials so reflexively dissemble and misdirect every time? In the end, all they're doing is undermining confidence in the integrity of their own institutions. That doesn't seem a smart move.

For some reason, these political figures are desperately seeking a Tea Party type to go off. And if one ever does the media will go nuts and attack everyone involved with the protests. However, when an Islamic extremist does something here they try and downplay it because that's not what the far left wants to see/hear.
Just because they're failed attacks by extremists doesn't make the threat unimportant or less dangerous. The threat is real and if we keep downplaying it it'll only get worse. At some point there's going to be another successful attack. Could be this year could be 10 years from now. But they're not going to stop because we don't call them out for what the do or attempt to do. It just makes us look weak.
But it is more troubling that so many have the first reaction to accuse/suspect those who have up to this point been nothing but peaceful, although vocal, in protesting the massive expansion of gov't. I guess we know who they fear more...Infinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan

I think SubGod’s observations are spot on. I’ll address one aspect and leave aside the odd statements by some in the media, etc. related to the Teaparty movement and every violent terrorist attack.
If I were to be charitable, I would say that every time a government official automatically attempts to downplay and/or marginalize an attempted terrorist attack by stating it is a “one off”, perpetrated by a “lone wolf”, or somehow unsophisticated – that they believe this is their duty as public officials. Put another way, they are attempting to provide comfort to the population by reassuring them – every thing is fine – “the system worked”, etc. Even when it is clear everything is not fine and the system is obviously flawed.
The problem is that it is not a government official’s role to provide such reassurance in every instance, especially when they realistically cannot due so. The American people are far more sophisticated about these things than those officials appear to believe, and they can be talked to like adults. For example, Giuliani after 9-11 sugar-coated nothing – he was blunt and to point about the ramifications of the attack. This inspired confidence in Guiliani’s leadership from everyone – even those who previously didn’t like Guiliani.
In our system, a politician is an employee, not a parent. For a rational employer, an employee who gives it to you straight will always be someone you take more seriously than an employee who pretends that everything is fine when everything isn’t. Poo pooing a serious threat is irresponsible and dangerous. It also undermines the public’s confidence in the leaders of the government institutions charged with providing for our safety.
And the American people do recognize this – they are not stupid. They are not children.
