It can take up to a decade to be allowed in and cost thousands of dollars. That is ridiculous. We can do background checks and get people in much faster than that.

The only reason immigration is never really dealt with is because both parties love to use it as a rallying cry for their base. Republicans act as though the majority are bad apples and the Dems act like everyone is a victim. Neither do anything to make it better. You want less illegal immigration? Don't make immigrating so ****ing complicated and difficult to accomplish. People immigrate illegally because they don't have the money or ability to wait years upon years.

You also want to help curb the flow of illegal immigration, or immigrations as a whole? End the war on drugs. Drugs have been winning that war since the beginning and it only empowers the cartels and corrupt governments in Central America which leads to economic struggles and excessive violence which pushes so many of those trying to get in, out of their own countries. Doing that would also cut down on some of the violence in America's biggest cities. Most gang violence is based around the drug trade. But if we do that, Dems can't blame guns for everything and Reps can't accuse Dem cities of being lawless hell holes.
Sorry, Sub, but you wouldn't know how to solve this problem. You sound like you are for Open Borders, which is on the very liberal side of the libertarian argument.

You need to look at the history of this debate. The paralysis of Congress on this issue goes all the way back to the Reagan Presidency and immigration reform. They made 8-10 Million or so illegal immigrants eligible for Citizenship, and said the problem was solved except that the sieve of illegal immigration continued. At that time Hugo Chavez was leader of the Farm Workers Party (legal farm workers from Mexico) and Chavez was against illegal immigration because it lowered wages of the LEGAL Farm Workers in California. Ever since that time, Conservatives have said that the Border needs to be secured before any immigration reform will happen, and if they really want to solve the problem, they need the Senate Conservatives on this issue.

Now we have anywhere from 11 Million (that's what Democrats say) to 40 Million (that is what one group of Conservatives say) illegal Immigrants in America and more are coming all of the time. They aren't coming because of Drugs (although Coyotes are taking advantage of people who want to come and are consuming Border Agents in order to get illegal drugs into the U.S.). Probably 25 Million Illegal Immigrants are here right now that perhaps are ready to become citizens.

Everyone of these illegal Immigrants are coming because our public schools will take them in for free and they have a better education here than in Central America, etc. where their public schools are a shambles. Also, all illegal immigrants receive protection from our hospitals where their hospitals are a shambles. In a good number of states, all illegal immigrants (legal immigrants too) receive welfare monies from the State and Federal Governments if they can't find a job right now. There are many lower paying jobs that immigrants can fine for $10.00-15.00 per hour that don't require any skills. Some of these lower paying jobs are taken from citizens who don't have a high school degree but that isn't always the case.

But questions on this will always be present:

-Can and Should the U.S. take on all comers that say they want to be citizens? We have 330 Million Citizens now, with probably 25 Million already here. How many more lower educated Citizens should we take on?

-Is Border Security important? If it is, building a wall and hiring Border Agents shouldn't be a problem.

-It used to be that the immigrants assimilated into the fabric of the U.S., but that's not true anymore. Knowing the English language, caring about the symbols such as the flag, etc. were important to immigrants, but now CRT is becoming popular, etc.

-Not all immigrants are created equal. Some would contribute to our society, and some wouldn't.

-What do we do with the gang members from Central America who make it in and create more problems? Legalizing ALL Drugs may solve some of the problem, but I guarantee you that they would find a way to make money illegally, and cause more criminal problems.

The Social problems above are just the tip of the iceberg, and of all poor immigrants are allowed, will grow exponentially. You are young, and in small town America, feel immune to the Social problems, but having worked around many of the Social problems in Central Wichita, I guarantee you that they are many. All large towns take the brunt of these Social problems and how to solve them.

As someone who has known multiple people who have come to this country legally and done it the right way, it is immensely easier to do it here than any other country on the planet. Everyone of the people that I know who have done it have done it gladly and jumped through any potential hoops they have needed to without thinking twice.

I think there are several considerations on immigration:

        1. it’s too easy to get here and stay illegally. We do not have the stones to stop illegal crossings or deport illegal aliens.
        2. it’s too easy to get immigrant family members here legally and permanently.
        3. If you are allowed in with a work visa, this needs to be a much easier permanent basis (as long as you keep your job) or a much shorter temp basis. The 6 year green cards result in reduced wages for STEM and reduced need for STEM education.

What people should be taking note with regards to Cuba, is who sees the demonstrators in Cuba as the bad guys. And you know there are many, and what their political leanings are. It seems to me, that no American should sympathize on the side of the Cuban government, but yet there obviously are those who do. And those people mean to be in charge here, yet too many people can't connect the dots.

Flip side to this is that it ensures the people that do come here legally are hard working, persistent, and not likely to be a leech on society.

This is "rich". The Biden Administration says that Cubans aren't welcome in America, and should not seek asylum. I guess the only legal, illegal way into the U.S. is through the Southern Border.

"Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday warned would-be migrants from Cuba and Haiti against trying to reach the United States illegally by sea.

He said the voyage is too dangerous and they will not be allowed to enter.

'Let me be clear: If you take to the sea, you will not come to the United States,' Mayorkas said at a news briefing."

I could be wrong, but I thought Cubans had a special exemption in this regard. ie Cubans are not in violation of the law by crossing the Gulf to Florida.

I’ve never heard that, and There were a number of other articles saying the same thing, so I’m speculating you are wrong.

I did a quick search and it appears there was a wet feet dry foot policy instituted in the 60s regarding Cubans, but Obama ended it in 2017 on his way out.

Makes sense. Can't have outspoken anti-socialists washing ashore.
