Max Impact (Air Force Music Ensemble)

The Air Force has sure changed. They've always had musical soloists, ensembles, and larger groups that were serving for the military. I don't remember if the soloist at the MVC was from the Air Force or not, but he was a very good musician.

I had never heard of Air Max but they are a Rock Band. Their entire group, guitarist, and soloists are quite good. They have also created some of their own original songs with videos trying to convey their military mission of service to their country.

Some of their Original Songs include American Airman (newest release), Send Me, Stand, Find You, and Locked and Loaded.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts after listening.

I believe Jerry Van Dyke was a part of a group like this (just looked it up; he was part of the Tops in Blue). Luther from Coach is one of my favorite sitcom characters of all time.

I cannot claim to have served in the military, but my friends in the Marines and the Army would be saying something like, "These folks have to do something since they're never busy fighting," after reading this.

I'm less than an expert and someone in the military could speak about this subject better than I. However, while I don't know about the different roles in the military, I do know there are many roles. I would imagine that these ensemble members could make a lot of money if they were on tour and making albums for themselves rather than for the United States Air Force. I would also think that people who serve behind the front lines such as food service, base security, mechanics, desk jobs, procurement, and numerous other roles that are not fighting roles are also important to the military effort. I don't know if your frienc would feel like they are all less than those than fight or not, but maybe they are. However, these roles have always been important to the war effort from WW 2 to today. I don't know if I like the idea of disrespecting the other roles of service.

The Air Force Band are not like regular members in that they are given the rank of TSgt / E-6 after completion of basic training. They are not shown the same respect among their peers because they didn’t earn a rank that typically takes 11 years on average to attain.

TSgt/E-6 isn’t part of my knowledge base so my questions from my lack of knowledge would be .....

do a lot of vets believe that the bands aren’t necessary and they should be discontinued? Or Are they relatively supportive of their roles and feel they have an important mission too? Or maybe the way the musicians receive their promotions should be changed? What do vets think?

I've been in a long time and I personally feel it's more of a recruiting tool/public outreach than something that exists for the benefit of the Air Force members. It is similar with having the Thunderbirds/Blue Angels/Golden Knights performing at an Air Force base open house like at McConnell this September. It showcases the Air Force to the local community and promotes good public relations. If you are in a deployed environment, any avenue of live entertainment is going to be a good thing but I doubt few active veterans stateside are going to reach out for this but that is a matter of personal taste. TSgt is an abbreviated rank of Technical Sergeant and E-6 is the associated pay grade. The Air Force Band are the golden boys who get special favor so there going to be some bitterness. Imagine you worked hard and sacrificed at your job and along comes somebody who is handed out that in in 8 weeks. Good on them for having the talent to be selected but respect is earned.

As an outsider, my perception of the Air Force is different from yours (as a veteran, combat or otherwise) and in my opinion, less important than yours. However, I will say that there are a lot of people (mainly far leftists) that don’t paint a pretty picture of the necessity of the armed forces for U.S. safety and for world stability. The “I’m An American Airman” video (and other videos of those original songs) definitely shows the Air Force (Engineers, Satellite Scientists, Computer Specialists, Pilots, Parachutists, Air Refuelers, etc. ) in all of their roles in a positive light. I don’t know if you are Air Force or not but if you are, you should feel proud of the way you were portrayed in these musical videos. Whether these videos and concerts are given to middle school students or other groups or more active recruiting, they are very positive imo.
