Brandon Victor Dixon’s remarks Friday night came from a good place. But they also yet again revealed the peculiar failure of liberal America to practice the empathy it preaches.

The actor who plays Aaron Burr in “Hamilton” thanked Vice President-elect Mike Pence for coming to the show, then spoke up for “the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us . . . or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us.”

The words were perfectly respectful — but the implication was downright rude.

And blindly condescending. All the marches and media hysteria have made it quite plain how much alarm many feel over Donald Trump’s victory.

More important: Pence had already sent a darn clear message by coming to see the show. He had just listened to the very voices Dixon (speaking for the cast) was asking him to hear. (Plus, facing scattered boos on the way into the theater, he’d also told his family, “That’s the sound of freedom.”)

A Trump supporter tried disrupting a performance of the Robert De Niro-directed “A Bronx Tale: The Musical” on Saturday — standing up during the curtain call and displaying a “Keep America Great!” flag toward the audience.

“The times we live in,” tweeted audience member Joe Del Vicario, along with a pic showing the Broadway protest.

“At the end of [the performance], a man turned around and faced the audience to show us how big of a pair he has,” Del Vicario explained. “He was escorted shortly after.”

Several people in attendance took to social media to document what happened Saturday night at the end of the 8 p.m. showing of “A Bronx Tale” — which is directed by De Niro and four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks.

Photos posted on Twitter showed the Trump supporter standing up in the front row with the “Keep America Great” campaign flag in his hands as cast members take their final bow.

    “TRUMP 2020,” the flag said.

People in the crowd, however, looked like they couldn’t have cared less.

In the photos posted online, almost everyone in the first few rows has their eyes locked on the stage, including the people right next to the man. His demonstration appears to be a direct response to the “F–k Trump” comments that De Niro made during the Tony Awards last week.
I'm surprised the patriot didn't get the **** beaten out of him. All he lost was his freedom of speech. A small price to pay in a room full of communists.

One is a cast member and one is an audience member. That honestly couldn't be more different. That's like saying LeBron is allowed on the court as a liberal, but you're forced to stay in the stands as a conservative. DOUBLE STANDARD!

It is not like LeBron is allowed on the court as a liberal, but you're forced to stay in the stands as a conservative. It is saying that LeBron can say Anti-Trump things from the court, but you are not allowed to say pro-Trump things from the stands.

But, on the other hand, I am not sure I see the double standard that Cold is trying to say there is. I also don't see the lost "freedom of speech".

jdmee, I'm not sure I follow, but it's probably not important since you are not claiming there's a double standard. LeBron would be saying liberal things in his employment. People have paid to see him, and LeBron is taking the risk that his employer will decide it's not worth his controversy (see: Colin Kaepernick). In the stands, no one has paid to see you and you are subject to the rules of the venue as a visitor. They are obviously going to kick you out if you make a scene since you are not the person anyone has paid to come and see. It's not like a security guard is going to go to LeBron and be like "excuse me, sir. You are making a scene and I'm going to have to escort you out."

jdshock, I agree with everything you said there. The difference I pointed out is the person in the stands is not trying to "rush the court". i.e. The person wasn't kicked out because he tried to get on stage. Which is how I took your original comment. He got kicked out because he made a scene.
