The NCAA regional selection committee has not discriminated against smaller arenas in the past. If you look at the historically awarded locations there are many "smaller" arenas sprinkled in there. I am fairly confident we will get a regional as long as they don't raise the minimums above 15k. If they'll award a regional at the Cow Palace, they'll award one anywhere...

Well, the arena wont be finished till late 2008 or 2009, so if it's a 15,000 maximum non-expandable capacity, that might give us only 1 or 2 years to get a regional.

Except that 15k may not get us an NCAA tourny game.

We're lucky people in this town voted for it. Usually there is public outrage whenever the city/county spends 184 cents, let alone 184 million bucks. Beggars can't be choosers, guys. 15,000 seats in a new state of the art arena is better than 10,500 at the crappy Coliseum.

I wonder how much more money it would have cost to add 5,000 more seats. I don't have a problem with the 15,000 especially how much crap the arena is getting in the paper and online.

If it's 15k for basketball then it's a joke and a waste of money
That's what I've been saying ever since I found out it was going to be 15,000 seats about four months ago.

Yes - when the vote yea campaign was around it was stating 15k fixed seats. But after the vote was finished - the county came in and said it wasn't 15k "fixed" seats - but 15k for basketball (including some floor seats because the court is smaller than the bottom of the arena seating.) So it was going to be more like 13,500-14,000 fixed plus floor seating during basketball. If that has changed I apologize. When the county came out with the 13-14,000 number I got pi$$ed and haven't followed it much since then.

That's interesting. I was involved with the vote yea campaign from day one and it was always "15,000 fixed seats for basketball." The capacity for concerts would be around 17,000. I don't believe this has ever changed.

In any case vbird's point still holds. You know that whatever the capacity is, the official capacity to host a regional will be bumped above that. Murphy's Law always wins.

I thought it was 15k fixed seat which would mean 17-18k for basketball?
