  • Should Wichita Build a Casino?

Just curious on how my fellow Shocker fans view the upcoming vote.

I actually like a Park City casino better....but if Ruffin and Trump do it right it could be a downtown draw. I just don't want some piece of crap downtown.

I'm not sure how I feel. I've heard and seen reports that support both sides and I can understand both sides of the debate. If there is a casino it SHOULD be downtown. If it gets voted down, it won't hurt me one way or another. I'd never use the casino personally so it's whatever.

I don't think it's a question of whether it would be done right...I don't think Trump would have his name attached to anything second rate. A couple weeks ago I was sitting on the fence, I like to go to casinos occasionally (twice a year maybe) for the entertainment value, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if it didn't pass. However, the more details I've been hearing recently about what kind of casino it would be and who would be involved, makes me think it might actually be a good idea.

It's kinda like that Downtown arena vote. If you vote no for the Downtown arena, we're going to raise your taxes anyway to fix up that pile they call the Kansas Coliseum. I mean it seems we're basically voting for a Casino in Sedgwick County or Sumner County on August 7th (A Casino is going somewhere, you pick where)...if we vote no that means it's going a couple miles south in Sumner County and we will still have the negative effects of the Casino with out reaping all the possitives.

          My thinking is this:

Given a choice between being taxed without a choice or being taxed with an option, I'll take the latter.

In all likelyhood the casino will be supported by local dollars, for the most part. But if these dollars help to offset higher taxes then at least I get choice as a consumer if I want to contribute to the tax, at least in part.

Of course this assumes that the government won't go ahead and raise our taxes as much anyway and that they will be fiscally responsible with the new windfall which I concede is a near impossibility.

Like most things, do it right or don't do it at all.

If I see a bunch of doublewides pushed together just "because we can" I foresee arson. Also if a big pole barn goes up like the new Casino just south of the border then that also should be burned to the ground. Make it first class and invest in Wichita if you expect us to give you our dollars.

...I don't think Trump would have his name attached to anything second rate.
Here in Tampa a couple of years ago, grandiose plans were announced for a super plush high rise downtown condo named Trump Tower. The name generated much interest, Trump came to town, publicly gave his blessing and many of the $$million$$+ condos were pre-sold.

Unfortunately two-three years later, ground still has not been broken; financing is not available to even start, etc., etc. To make a long comedy short (funny at least to those of us not able to plunk down several million for a second abode) even Trump has joined the long list of parties suing the project. He was suing because this year they did not pay the 100K+ annual fee for the use of his name on the project.

Beware, just having the Trump name associated with it, doesn’t automatically make it a Trump property nor a Trump concern beyond his annual fee.

                I dont gamble.
I would rather waste my money on something tangible *shoes anybody*
The one and only time I have gambled was when I went to KC for opening day.
I threw 10 dollars on the roulette table broke even after a couple of rounds and left 10 dollars intact.

With that said I like the idea and support the idea. I see both sides of the arguement.
But at the same time nobody knows whats better for me other than me. Because you dont like it doesnt mean you should be in my face about it.

With that said if I was to vote I would vote yes.
But since i probably wont vote it wont really matter to me either way.

I believe Wichita/SG county will see very little tax money. Most of it goes to the State.

The WSU study shows that tax revenue may decrease b/c consumers will be substituting things that require sales tax (like movies, concerts, plays) for gaming, which doens't have a local tax component.

I don't think the world will end either way, but I think Wichita will be better without one.

kc, the problem with #s 4 and 5 in your positives is that Wichita is not KC. Wichita is not a tourist destination and a casino isn't likely to change that. It will mostly keep gambling Wichitans in Wichita.

And what about all of the current businesses that stand to lose when a larger portion of discretionary income is shifted to a casino? Some of those will be local business owners who put quite an investment of their own into Wichita.

Adding entertainment options is nice, but there is no way I would support this type of entertainment when it comes at a high cost (all those negatives you mention, money aside). What other large entertainment options/venues bring even a fraction of the social ills that a casino brings? All for a 2% return? If you think the State of Kansas (or NE Kansas) looks down on Wichita now, wait until they are laughing all the way to the treasury.

Of course, my opinion doesn't really matter because I don't live in Sedgwick County. But I like tossing my 2 pennies into the well.

Royal, I think if correctly done a casino in Wichita could be a great attraction. Think nudist, it sells. A clothing optional casino!!

I remember shortly after I moved to Houston after graduating from WSU, a California firm purchased land adjacent to the apartments I lived in and announced they would build a “clothing optional” apartment complex, very exclusive and very pricy.

It was 100% pre-leased before ground breaking. In less than a year it was open, much to the chagrin of the 100%, very disillusioned, young professional male tenants. It was FUNNY and these guys were stuck with a years lease (and deserved it!).

The California company had a very profitable apartment complex which, of course, they turned that first year.

I still laugh remembering it and thank God I was not single at that time, I might have been the first to sign on. I remember looking around our apartment pool area when it was first announced thinking, “OH YES, HELL YES, MAKES SENSE TO ME!!”

I'm not on here trying to promote casinos or anything...but I found it interesting that FOX news reported last night that they called and spoke with Police departments of a few cities in Missouri and Oklahoma. Everyone (Police Chiefs) they talked to said they haven't noticed any increase in crime....and one of the cities in Oklahoma has 4 casinos.

I've read several of the "Vote No" pamphlets and most of the are listing crimes rates in Mississippi, Atlantic City, Vegas and other places, I would think what's going on in Oklahoma, Missouri and other parts of Kansas would be closer to what's going to happen in Wichita, not what's happened 1000's of miles away.

I understand what you're saying....but it's freedom of choice. Since I'm not a business owner, I really don't care if they have a hard time. Maybe they should offer a better product or service if they lose customers because of the casino. Maybe a few restaurants closing would be a good thing since we have had about 1,000 open up the past 5 years.
If you have a product/service that people need or want, you don't need to worry.

But in reality...I don't think it will have as much effect as people think.

KC I really question these as your "positives." First off, does Wichita really need any more restuarants? It already seems like that's the only thing people wanna do here is eat out! lol

And I agree with Royal that thinking this will increase tourism is not realistic. No one from the NE/KC area will come, they have options; no one from OKC will come, they already have them, too. Wichita will never be a "destination" for gamblers with the other locations available. Do you expect anyone to fly to Wichita to come to our casino? It won't happen. Even the KS lottery study done earlier this year found that 80% of the business is expected to come from a 50 mile radius of the casino. This will directly impact local commerce as unless people have discretionary income they're saving for a casino now, money spent (and lost) at the casino will be money NOT spent at local businesses and they will feel it. Any jobs gained by the casino will be lost by other businesses. A casino is not economic development, its an economic leach. There will be less shopping, less movie attendance, and less sports attendance. We can't even keep a baseball team now, do you think anything else will stay with a casino? KC I don't know how you think casino's give back to the community, but this doesn't seem like it.

Studies from impartial 3rd parties have shown the NEGATIVE economic impact this will have on our local economy. The state may be the "owner" but they will contract with a casino boss to come in and run it and that boss will get 73% of the take, the state will only get 22% not much is promised to Sedgwick Co. and I believe nothing to Wichita. The Wichita police dept has said they would have to add staff to police the negative effects, at additional cost. There will be more bankruptcies, divorces, suicides and broken families. This is all but a fact based on what has happened in other communities, is this really what you want to bring into our city?!?

People say we already have the lottery and greyhound park, but there is no comparison in the addictive aspect of those and a local casino. So many more people will be drawn in to lose money, and will become addicted trying to win it back. The casino bosses know they will make money off of Wichita, that's why they're willing to spend $200 mil to build a casino to get 73% of the income. There is just no way this will be good for Wichita, the only people who win are the casino owners.

And even if you want a casino here this is NOT the way you want it. This bill was snuck through in the middle of the night with 22 PAID casino lobbyists on hand including 3 former speakers of the house. If this bill passes a seven member committee will decide where to put the casino, we will have NO say in where it goes! This committee will be wined & dined by the casino lobby to where its best for them, not us. There are no loss limits in place to limit how much gamblers can lose at a time. And just look at the wording the vote, they don't even want to say "casino", instead it says you're voting to operate a "lottery gaming facility" in Sedgwick County, how stupid do they think we are? This is a badly written bill, a badly written ballot and an all around bad deal!!

I urge everyone who is considering voting yes to at least read the information here:

There is a reason that the former chairman of Cessna says its a bad idea. There is a reason Intrust says they would leave Wichita after 100+ years here if we get a casino. If this passes and they build a casino there's no going back, this is a decision you make for your children and future generations, PLEASE make an informed decision, get the facts before you vote!!!
