  • Goosing Statues in the Park

American Children at Play in the 1920's.

A very close friend was visiting us last week with her husband (who I served together with in Iran for 30 months (1973-75) related that the following was a little dity her father used to chant with other young boys during his youth in the mid-1920's, when playing outdoors on warm summer nights. He just passed away only a couple of months ago, at age 96, and she had fondly remembered him occasionally through the years, chanting this dity.

We were sightseeing in St. Augustine, FL, and were walking through this quite nice park with a lot of statutes of Spanish officers on horseback. Spotting the statues and horses got the best of her and as tears stared running down her cheeks, she started humming and singing her father's favorite chant. The third line broke me up.

Tra la tra la - Every summer evening after dark,

Tra la tra la - We’d goose the statues in the park.

Tra la tra la - Even Sherman’s horse had his do,

Tra la tra la - How about you?
